Kenneth Stanley Obituary

KENNETH RAY STANLEY Kenneth Ray Stanley, 71, departed the loving arms of his family and entered peacefully into the arms of his Savior on Saturday, July 15, 2017. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 47 years, Sandra Willoughby Stanley, as well as his parents, Jim Stanley and Maybelle B. Stanley and brother, David R. Stanley. Kenneth is survived by Sheila Stanley Roberson, loving niece and caregiver and husband Louis Roberson; niece Vanessa Stanley Holden (Paul); great nephews Jason Ross Roberson (Erin), David Alexander Holden; great nieces Sara Roberson Holmes (Bradley), Molli Paige Roberson, Brittany Stanley Chaney (Richard); great-great niece Lillian C. Chaney and great-great nephew Emmet W. Roberson. Born in Buncombe County, NC, Kenneth's family moved to Wilmington soon after his birth, where he lived and worked for the remainder of his life. He was a graduate of New Hanover High School (1963), Wilmington College (1967), attended Tennessee Technical University and later completed his graduate degree. Originally desiring to pursue dentistry, Kenneth instead chose a career in education and taught in New Hanover County Schools for 32 years until his retirement. He is perhaps most remembered for his many years of teaching chemistry at New Hanover High School. After retirement, he worked as a Learning and Development Manager for Cisco Systems until his death. Kenneth lived a faithful life, devoted to his Savior, Jesus Christ, the love of his life, Sandra, his work and the Pine Valley Church of God, where he was a member for over 50 years. Kenneth sang in the church choir, quartets and trios; played tenor saxophone; directed the youth choir and served with Sandra for several years as Minister of Music. He was a longtime member of the Deacon Board and served with distinction as Church Treasurer for 36 years until his death. Funeral Services will be held at 7:00 pm on Wednesday, July 19th at Pine Valley Church of God with the Reverend Larry Horrell officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 - 7:00 pm at the church prior to the Memorial Service. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, July 20th at Greenlawn Memorial Park. Memorial Contributions may be made in Kenneth's honor to Pine Valley Church of God, 3810 Shipyard Blvd., Wilmington, NC 28403. Ken was a colleague, mentor, friend and advisor.
His range of knowledge was amazing: Academic, Administrative, Assessment, Curricular, Information Technology, Employment, Parenting, and Retirement, to name a few.
Perhaps his greatest gifts were Kindness and Encouragement... to everyone from the uneducated to those earning the highest academic degrees, inclusive of the Students down the street to the Professors from around the world.
We all knew him from a different perspective, but miss him together.
Peace to all!

Ken's team at Cisco held a lovely meeting today where they remembered him and shared stories of their time with him. I didn't know Ken personally, but I've been truly inspired by how he touched the lives of others. He clearly represented the heart of his Saviour to others while here on earth. I didn't meet him here, but I look forward to meeting him in Heaven. A new mantra has formed among us at Cisco "Be Kind like Ken"!

Ken was an active Amateur Radio operator (Ham), as WB4JLU, in Wilmington a few years ago, and contributed significantly to our local emergency operations and overall fellowship.
I have submitted his obit to the national Amateur Radio organization, the ARRL, for inclusion in their next national magazine publication.

Even though I only knew Ken for a short time, he made an incredible impact on me with his kindness and positive attitude. He always had a smile in his voice! He made me realize that no matter what obstacles come your way, keep a positive attitude and find a way around them! I will miss him dearly.

Like so many others, I am a better person for knowing Ken. His infectious smile, grace and charm light the lives of everyone who comes in contact with him. Our Cisco family will miss him greatly. We will honor and cherish his memory by continuing all the amazing work he drove for so many years, impacting millions of students all over the world. I wish peace and love to everyone feeling his loss. We cry, but he will continue to have us laugh even more and we will always remember.

Kenneth Stanley and I attended school together from the elementary and middle school grades at Sunset Park through graduation at New Hanover High School in 1963. We had many classes together including Chemistry because we both aspired to go on to College after NHHS. We were friends as well as fellow students who spent a lot of time together because we enjoyed each other's company. I found Kenneth to be a funny, smart, and ambitious person. He was a very kind and friendly person.
We lost touch with each other when we both went
away to College to obtain our Batchelors and Master's degrees.
My next contact with Kenneth was when he was teaching Chemistry at NHHS in the late 1970"s. I married Karen Costello who was a French Teacher at NHHS during part of the time that Kenneth taught there. Karen spoke highly of Kenneth as a Teacher and a person. Since my job was in Concord, NC, Karen left and moved with me. This was my last contact with him.
My condolences to all who knew, loved/ liked, respected and will miss Kenneth.
Rest in Peace Kenneth.

Reporting to Ken for the last decade at Cisco Systems, I have had the privilege and pleasure of benefiting from his endlessly positive, enthusiastic, and generous spirit. As a leader, Ken could take any "the sky is falling" situation and turn it around immediately with a healthy dose of humor and support - it was like magic the way he could make the most demanding situations feel suddenly lighthearted and manageable. His humor was always a welcome refuge, and I will miss his infectious laugh.

Ken would often end team meetings with the phrase "Thank you all, for all that you do."

I would just like to say Thank You Ken, for all that you've done for all of us.

Ken Stanley was an extraordinary person whose friendship I will always cherish. As my immediate supervisor for Cisco Systems, his kind, intelligent and witty manner endeared him to all. Ken was never one to take credit for accomplishments but always passed that credit to others under his leadership. Even more importantly, Ken was a man of strong faith and love for family. He surely leaves a wonderful legacy for all. Rest in peace, my friend!

Mr. Stanley was my chemistry teacher at New Hanover High School in the 1970's. He was my favorite teacher and I have thought of him often and fondly through the years. I will always remember that when we did class schedules I signed up for a free 7th period for my senior year. When I got my schedule back I was surprised to see that I had Advanced Chem instead. Mr. Stanley was my homeroom teacher and changed my card. He will be missed.

Ken Stanley was an AMAZING man that touched the heart of everyone that he came in contact with. He was as close to an angel than anyone I have ever known and exemplified all of the great qualities that we all strive to have. If everyone could have 1/10 of his patience, grace and joy for life, this world would be a much better place. For the past 16 years, he has been an anchor for me. His work with Cisco Systems has positively impacted millions. I will miss him dearly, particularly his smile, his laugh, and his comforting support. He was such an enduring light for all of those around him and I am profoundly blessed to have been counted among the many that was able to be a part of his journey in this life.

I am so sorry for your loss! This wonderful man was the kindest chemistry teacher I think that ever lived! I blew up an experiment once in a lab during class and he didn't get upset at all, he just came over with that kind smile of his and helped me get it under control (it was laughing gas), and continued with class. He passed me, but he was still an amazing teacher, not just of chemistry but of life, and understanding. I wish we had more Kenneth Ray Stanley's in this world today! Thank you for sharing him with us!

My condolences and prayers are offered to all,
