Kevin A. Cuming never had a girlfriend _ but his mom was working on that. While he was in Iraq, his mother, Yolanda, would tell him on the phone that she was scoping out prospects while walking through New York. "I used to say to him, ''I''m checking out all the girls for you for when you come home,''" she said. Cuming, 22, of White Plains, N.Y., died Aug. 21 while on patrol in Baghdad when a rocket-propelled grenade hit a Humvee he was driving. He was based at Fort Hood, Texas, and wanted to be a cook after serving. His room at home displays his collection of shells and rocks, his uniform from cooking classes at Westchester Community College, his Lego collection, his mountain biking magazines and a drawing of Spider-Man that he had done several years ago. Friends and neighbors remembered Cuming as a good natured guy who liked to mountain bike, cook and listen to rock ''n'' roll. "The saddest memory now is when I am older and I look back and think of my best friend as a 22-year-old boy," said Paul Recchia. "That is what is going through my mind. He will forever be 22."

Not sure what to say?

Kevin I just met your mom in Ireland on vacation. Someone told her I was in the military and she wanted to talk about you on this of all days. How ironic that on this tragic 20th anniversary she meets a 1Cav attached soldier who was in Iraq in 2004. Today, I learned a little about you and a mom who loves and misses you. Take care my brother.

SPC Cumming and I were in the same Squadron. Every time we saw each other we would exchange a hello and a how are you doing. Kevin was a nice young man and I remember his smile when we greeted each other. He volunteered for the assignment that he took, which says a lot about his character. Although quiet, he was evidently bold. My men and I responded to where SPC Cumming and his patrol were attacked. We recovered him and while doing so I embraced him. I remember he looked peaceful...

Always remembering Kevin. "Some gave all."

We remembered Kevin yesterday at our Memorial Day BBQ. I put his picture and memorial bracelet out for all to see and think about. We think of him and his mom often. May God bless Kevin, Yolanda and Christine this Memorial Day and always.

Hello,
We would like to express our deepest condolences and also let the Cuming Family know that we recently sent Care Packages to American troops in the war zones. Each box carried a dedication sheet that includes the name, service information and a photo of your loved one. We recognize that this is a humble tribute, but we wanted you to know that it is heartfelt and made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals in the youth hockey community and beyond. We will not forget. May...
