Kevin A. Gilbertson was known as an upbeat, rabble-rousing, ball of fire nicknamed Gilmoe. "He was always go-go-go," said his former stepmother Diane Gilbertson. "It hit me. It hit me hard." Gilbertson, 24, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Aug. 31 of wounds sustained during combat operations Aug. 29 in Ramadi. He was a 2001 high school graduate and was assigned to Schweinfurt, Germany. "He joined the Army right out of high school to get a college education when he got out," said Don Gilbertson, the soldier's father. "His dream was getting a degree and supporting his family. He was the greatest kid in the world." Gilbertson's aunt, Amy Gilbertson, said Kevin was born when she was in third grade. "He was kind of like my little brother," she said. "He's always been very proud. He loved his country. He really embraced being a soldier." He also is survived by his wife, Nina, and 8-month-old son, Timmy. He was on his second tour. "Whatever Kevin did, he did in a big way," the Rev. Marty Schuhmacher said at Gilbertson's funeral.
