Kevin BROOKS Obituary

(Age 71)

On October 6th, 2021 at 9:15 PM the world lost a wonderful person. Kevin Brooks passed away the evening of his birthday while his wife, Sandy, son, Kasey, and one of his Visiting Angels caregivers, DeDe, surrounded him with love. A retired 35-year State Farm Insurance agent, Kevin had been fighting lung cancer caused by being a "downwinder" from the Hanford Nuclear plant. His cancer had spread to his brain. He was a true warrior during his different treatments for three entire years.

Kevin was a kind, warm, loving man. Everyone he interacted with ended up with a smile on their face. Kevin met his wife, Sandy, when he was 16 and she was 12. He was getting gravel removed from his knees by her mom after her brother, Mike, and Kevin were playing basketball outside. They married eight years later. December 21 would have been their 47th anniversary. They had one child, their son, Kasey, who Kevin loved dearly and was always so very proud of. Kevin enjoyed gardening and the outdoors. He loved camping and took Kasey camping whenever he could. The family went on "the great adventure of a lifetime" when Kevin took them tent camping all the way up to the Yukon Territories.

He also became a "sneakerhead" (like Kasey, who works for Nike) and enjoyed wearing cool Nike and Jordan shoes and clothes and the deeper connection that afforded him with Kasey. Kevin had a big heart (to go with his 6'8 frame he was so proud of) and loved helping others. Kevin occasionally paid utility bills anonymously for clients that couldn't afford to do so and would secretly leave groceries on doorsteps to make sure people had food. Later in his career, he rallied his clients and community to fill his office in beautiful downtown Gig Harbor with toys for Toys for Tots to the point there was nowhere to sit, and they had to bring a full semi-truck to transfer everything out. Kevin loved traveling and visited many countries and States. After retirement Kevin became a househusband and took care of the household while Sandy worked. He was GREAT at it and seemed to enjoy it. Sandy sure did! His retirement highlights were weekly lunches or coffee with his great friend, Terry, visiting his son Kasey and grandchildren Kelby and Toby and grandpuppies Dunk and Daisy. And, of course, traveling. When Kevin could no longer go out for lunch, because of COVID and his health, Terry would bring lunch or coffee over. They would sit on the back patio, distanced, with an electric blanket covering Kevin.

Kevin was born and raised in Cheney, Washington to Irving and Della Brooks and older sister Charlene. They all passed before him, as did his in-laws Ted, Frances and Mike. Sandy's parents ALWAYS liked Kevin best, over their two children. Numerous friends he's had since at least Kindergarten sent him birthday cards this year. He had happy tears as each card, with heartfelt written notes were read to him.

Besides Sandy, Kasey, Kelby and Toby, Kevin is survived by his brother-in-law, Stan, nephew and nieces Heather and Heather, Ted and Anne, Beth and Jerry, Cathryn and Brian, great niece Maev and Daniel, great nephews Aedyn, Coleman and Bennie and great-great niece Saiorse. He was much loved and respected by his family. He loved them immensely.

Due to COVID precautions and the unwillingness of some to get vaccinated, there will not be a memorial service, though Kevin will be remembered always.

We were sad and stunned to learn of Kevin's passing. Though it's been years and we've regrettably lost contact with the Brooks family, we have fond and happy memories of our times together. Kevin always had a smile, kind and amcouraging words, and a good sense of humor. Probably what stands out most was his sense of fairness and concern for others. He was a man of action if he could help. If there ever was an example of a 'Good man', Kevin was the poster boy for that. Big shoes to fill, quite literally!
The world lost a bright light, but he created ripples of hope and touched many lives with his kindness. What a role model for Kasey, and a loving and caring partner for Sandy.

We're so very sorry for your loss.
PS. Sandy, please contact me. Ive tried off/on for years to reach you. # is still the same. 759-1995

To Kevin's family, I was also was shocked at Kevin's passing and offer my condolences. I knew Kevin as a fellow State Farm agent thru many turbulent years, as the company went thru not always well received changes. Kevin, to me, always had a moral compass that kept him on his personal course that matched mine well. I could always count on him for good humor, sound opinions, and equally sound advice. When I retired, he was one of two agents I celebrated with for my retirement lunch. Since we both were avid hikers, we shared stories of our treks. I too will miss this gentle giant!

So very sorry to see of Kevin's passing. I have such fond memories of his smile and kindness being a neighbor in a competitor's office in downtown Gig Harbor. We would often chat as I did my walk by just because he was always welcoming...May the family have peace with their memories of this fine human!

Sandy, Kasey and extended family,
We are saddened to hear of Kevin's passing. I grew up in Cheney just a block from Kevin's home and he was a year behind me in school.
Sounds like Kevin grew to be a good man like his dad. Kevin's good deeds will be missed by all who benefited from them.
Our condolences to your family. Mary and Dale Davis

Our deepest sympathy for your loss. Kevin was my insurance agent for so many years, since 1982 when his office was across the street from Tacoma General until his retirement in the Gig Harbor office where we would would go and chat with him when we went to the Tides Tavern. He was a very special person and always had time to sit and visit. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him. With deepest sympathy and sharing in your sadness as you you remember Kevin.

Kevin was one of the first people we met when we relocated here in 1994. A true "Gentle Giant".
