Conboy-Westchester Funeral Home - Westchester Obituary

Kevin Vincent Murphy, Jr., age 67, of Des Plaines, Illinois, passed away Thursday, April 17, 2025, at Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, Illinois, after complications from a seizure disorder. He was born January 21, 1958, at Loretto Hospital in Chicago, Illinois, to the late Alice (Hamilton) and Kevin Murphy.

Kevin was a decades-long member of the Avenues to Independence community based in Park Ridge, Illinois. For close to 40 years, the Avenues community loved and supported him. A sports lover, he relished attending sporting events and following teams in the newspaper. His allegiances were fluid, including both the White Sox and Cubs, Bears, and KC Chiefs, Notre Dame, and his beloved Blackhawks. Kevin mostly enjoyed his own company, reading the paper and searching his iPad for various topics, including geography, history, architecture, and sports stadiums.

Kevin was preceded in death by his parents, Alice and Kevin Murphy, his sister, Alice Murphy Tapling, and his brother-in-law, George E. Tapling, III.

He is survived by his sisters Marianne Gapen, Carol Herbstritt, and Julie Stack, and his brother Brian Murphy; his in-laws, Clark Gapen, Terry Herbstritt, Karen Quasny, and John Stack; his dear friend, Patty Murphy; his nieces and nephews: Beth (Gapen) & Joe Bertoni, Molly (Gapen) & Matt Blohm, Megan Armstrong & Clark Gapen, Katie Herbstritt, Matthew Herbstritt, Ted Herbstritt, Colleen Tapling, Audrey (Leech) & George Tapling, IV, Jessica Miro & Robert Tapling, Charlie Stack, Liam Stack, and Caitlin Stack, Kevin’s Goddaughter.

Interment will be private.

Kevin’s life will be celebrated from 5:00 to 8:00 PM on Wednesday, May 21, 2025, at the Avenues to Independence Center for Independence, 444 Mercantile Ct, Wheeling, IL 60090.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Avenues to Independence (avenuestoindependence.org). Arrangements entrusted to Conboy-Westchester Funeral Home. For info 708-F-U-N-E-R-A-L.

Not sure what to say?

My sympathy to the Murphy family
Sister Sheila Nicholson

Kevin was my "Buddy."
He well knew that "Buddies always stick together."
I miss my Buddy.

I met Kevin about 12 years ago while working for Avenues to Independence, he was quite shy at first but we developed a unique bond over the years that I'll always cherish and remember. Kev's smile could melt a glacier, if you ever had the pleasure of knowing Kevin you know exactly what I mean.

Offering our deepest condolences during this difficult time.
