Despite his high rank, Lt. Col. Kim S. Orlando never hesitated to lead his soldiers personally, whether on a three-mile run in below-freezing temperatures or on patrol in the streets of Karbala. Chaplain Maj. Steve Turner recalled one particular run on a frigid January morning. Shorts only _ no warmup pants; jackets were optional. "We got to the line; the whistle blew. And Col. Orlando led the pack," Turner said. "He led by example." Orlando, 43, was one of three Fort Campbell soldiers killed Oct. 16 in a clash with gunmen guarding the headquarters of a Shiite cleric in Karbala in southern Iraq. Orlando, a native of Nashville, Tenn., enlisted in the Army as a military policeman in 1982 and was commissioned in 1986. Survivors include his wife, Sherry, who works in the public affairs office at Fort Campbell, Ky., and two sons.

Not sure what to say?

Hello,

We apologize for being so late in expressing our deepest condolences to you and your family. We want you to know that we will be sending Care Packages to deployed troops this week and several of these will be dedicated to your loved one. Each package will carry the name, photo, service branch, rank and hometown of Kim S. Orlando US Army Lieutenant Colonel.

We realize that this is a small tribute, but we do this with all respect and sincerity and we want you to know...

RIP Kim. You will be surely missed. I would like to have Sherry contact me as I want to share many great memories I have of being his roommate and stationed with him in Kornwestheim Germany in the early 80's.

Lt. Colonel Orlando, we have not forgotten you. You were one of a kind.

Kim and I grew up together in Nashville. I lost touch with him after we graduated from high school. Just before his last deployment, we spoke on the phone, reminisced about our childhoods and he invited me to visit him at Fort Campbell and have a cup of coffee. He was a fine person and I miss him.
