Remembering the 1st day I met Kurt on top of a bluff overlooking the John Day River chefing for our rafting trip some 25 years ago. He has made a constant impression on me every since. This also was my 1st encounter with the SkiKat group. Henry found me the perfect tent spot vista view & the Dindias commandeered my raft. So sad to lose Kurt's constant good will & enthusiasm for life that he shared every moment with him . . . only 2 years my senior!!!

About 60 years ago when I was growing up, Kurt had a cabin in Government Camp across the road from our family cabin. He would cook wonderful dishes over an open fire and the good smells emanating from his chimney would invite some to just happen to drop in!
Later, when I married and settled in Welches, the Chalet Swiss was a place to meet friends after skiing and for special occasions. Some of my fondest memories of my early years in Welches were from these gatherings. My father...

While we only knew Kurt from visiting with him at Chalet Swiss in Welches, we loved his restaurant and often drove there from Portland just for dinner. Both the atmosphere and food were excellent! We had lived in southern Germany during college and when Paul was in the Army, so it was great to find a restaurant with authentic Swiss cuisine here. We went there alone, with friends and took out-of-town visitors there and were never disappointed.
We are glad to see that Kurt had such...

We first met Kurt at the first Chalet Swiss location with my dad Otto Semet...enjoyed the amazing dinners and conversation...then enjoyed the second restaurant on the mountain, spaetzli, rolls and buntnerfleisch! Delicious as always and eventually he prepared dessert at my dads house in Lake Oswego for our children and creating pepper ice cream while saying more pepper! He was a gentleman and we are so glad to have known him!

I met Kurt about 1973. He and his wife came to our cabin just up from his home off Barlow Trail. We my ex husband Kurt Garbe frequented his first restaurant. It was small but very cozy. Loved his second location. We would have Kurt prepare pheasant and he would serve them with cream crazy and my favorite of his Spatzle. Several years i hadnt seen him as I got divorce and he was out selling cheese or cooking for someone. Reunited with him at Les Swab as we were having tires changed. He...

I ran into Kurt while skiing at The Meadows one day mid-February some 40 plus years ago. After a half day of skiing together, he invited me to join him for dinner at Chalet Swiss, which at the time, had moved to a new location in Welches. One day passed and he phoned and asked to join him again for dinner. Under my dessert plate was a gift. It was a round trip ticket in my name to Hawaii for two weeks in April.
Kurt and I remained good friends until his passing in May. Skiing,...
