Kurt Steiner Obituary

Kurt David Steiner passed away on Tuesday, March 25th. Born in Kitzingen, Germany on April 9, 1931, Kurt grew up in Nazi Germany before fleeing to America with his mother is 1941. Most of his extended family did not survive the Holocaust. His father Max was arrested on Kristallnacht and taken to the Dachau concentration camp. He was released nine months later and joined his family in the U.S. Kurt spent the remainder of his childhood in Cincinnati, Ohio and graduated from the University of Cincinnati as a certified public accountant. During his travels as a linen salesman, Kurt met and married his cherished wife of 56 years, Joyce Skolnek. Together, they moved to New Orleans and enjoyed their adopted city for most of their adult lives. They had a wonderful coterie of friends. He had a career with Grant Thornton as the managing partner of their local office. He was the Chief Financial Officer for the City of New Orleans under Sidney Barthelemy and loved his life in politics almost as much as his life in accounting. He played tennis at the Hilton and boated on Lake Ponchartrain. He was a member of Temple Beth-Israel in New Orleans and Agudis Achim in Austin, Texas. He served as a board member of the Jewish Federation of Greater New Orleans and Touro Infirmary. Kurt had a quick wit and joked with family, friends, and anyone in close proximity. He is survived by his loving children, Dr. Rodney Bruce Steiner (Jane) of New Orleans, LA, and Marci Steiner Dell of Austin, Texas and his eight grandchildren Jacob, Sydney, Olivia, Rachel, Madeline, Jason, Kevin and Jordan who adored Papa and Papa adored them. Kurt will be buried in Austin, Texas with Joyce. In lieu of flowers, please send memorials to your favorite charity. Tharp-Sontheimer Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Henry and I were saddened to read of Kurt's passing. We send our deepest sympathy to you their children and grandchildren. Your parents were like part of our family and so dear to us that we would all give each other a taste of the delicious dishes we selected (all different so we could sample four) at some of New Orleans best restaurants. We always exchanged holiday cards and talked about our children when together. We so enjoyed being with them. They were the best in the important ways.

Kurt became a good friend after I was elected as a political reformer to the Jefferson Parish School Board. I independently sought advisors from the major accounting firms with only Kurt stepping forward. He taught me how to read budgets and look for problem areas, providing significant assistance to a 27-year old who had intent and ability but little background. Working with the FBI and DOJ, I helped put away a dozen colluding contractors, a school board president, and the spouse of another board member. Without Kurt and the federal government, the situation would have worsened into some version of the Wild West. I miss Kurt. The citizens of Louisiana owe him a debt that is mostly unrecognized.
