Lance Monroe Storey of Cotulla passed away on Monday, July 31, 2023. He was born on March 21, 1974, the youngest of Denise and Dudley Storey, III. Lance was raised in Cotulla where he lived the majority of his life. He was a 1992 graduate of Cotulla High School. Lance grew up with his parents and siblings on the family ranches in the brush country of LaSalle County and was able to enjoy calling the Altito Ranch “home” for the last years of his too short life.
Lance was never one to stand still long enough to let the sun cast a shadow of him - he was an adventurous boy who never met a stranger. His infectious smile and sweet heart won the adoration of not only his family but the entire community in which he lived. He worked alongside both his grandfathers, his father and both brothers learning many a skill and trade - he loved the cattle and horse operations on the ranches riding along with his grandfather, Dudley Jr, also learning mechanical skills from his grandfather, Bill, but most especially loved learning from his father to move dirt “and iron” with heavy equipment. He was an incredible cook both in the kitchen and outside whether it be on the open flame of a campfire in the brush or his bar-b-que pits. Fish fries on Sundays watching football, playing shuffleboard he learned at Ruby’s Lounge, music and being the referee of family softball games (although somewhat biased towards the team his wife Linda was playing on) and sharing stories about “the good ole days” of being on the road in his Peterbilt “moving iron” were how he spent much of his time in his later years.
Lance’s greatest love was for his family. He was the youngest of the five “Storey kids” and learned to appreciate big adventure tagging along with all of them. As a little boy, he begged to be able to go along with them “to the ranch”. He loved to hunt, fish, ride horseback, ride bikes and dig in the dirt with his brothers and sisters. All these hobbies served him well as he grew into adulthood and started his own family teaching his own children to love the land and all the adventure it held. Most recently, he shared his love of the water with his family and purchased a home at Kingsland so they too could enjoy all the fun it offers with boating and water sports.
Saying that Lance and his presence will be missed by not only those who loved him the most and were closest to him, but also by his community, is quite an understatement.
Lance is survived by his wife, Linda, and his four children: Caitlyn, Tiffany, Andrew, and Alexis Storey. He was a proud grandfather of two: Adlee Storey and Blaze Lewis.
He is also survived and missed by his loving mother, Denise Storey; siblings Susan Rubio (DJ), Dudley “Bubba” Storey IV, Leighton “Sugie” Storey and Carle Storey (JoLee) along with his grandmother, Florence “Flossie” Highsmith, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members and friends.
Preceding him in death are his father, Dudley Storey, III, grandparents Bill Highsmith, Dudley (Jr) and LaNell Storey, and great-grandparents HD (Sr) and Annie Lee Storey, all of Cotulla.
Visitation will be held on Friday, August 4, 2023, at Peters Funeral Home from 5:00p.m. to 9:00p.m. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, August 5, 2023, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church at 10:00a.m. Interment will follow at the Cotulla East Cemetery.
