Guard With a Mission
By day, Larry Bowman worked as a security guard. By night and on weekends, he did missionary work. For him, they were part of the same ministry.

His mother, Ruth Bowman White, said he loved his security job at the World Trade Center because he often helped people who were lost or stuck in elevators. "His motto was to help people and see that they're O.K. and do what he can for them," she said. "He gave people directions and made sure that the direction was correct."

Even more important to him was his work for the Lord. On Sundays, he held services at nursing homes and at Rikers Island. Many days, he took food to the hungry. He played basketball with teenagers, and between games shared the word of God with them. Raised in a religious family, Mr. Bowman, 46, was called to God three years ago, his mother said, becoming a minister at the House of God Church Brooklyn No. 1.

"I spoke to Larry the Saturday before the tragedy," said his aunt, Lannie Williams, a senior minister at the church. "He was telling me all the good works that God is showing him and the work that he wants to do in the community. He was very good in the community. People listened to him. He pointed out that there's a better way. He said drugs is not the answer. Being out in the street is not the answer. The fast life is not the answer. God is the answer."

Not sure what to say?

As I reflect, three days later when I surfaced from out of my apartment, there was your picture posted upon the telephone booth. Of the many thousands who had perished on 9/11, I would come out and the Most High God loved you so much that HE would show me that you had gone home to be with the Lord. As I type this message, I feel the emotion that I experienced seeing your picture, knowing you were no longer here. It was no coincidence, rather it was purely spiritual. I only have good...

I think of you often brother. You always made sure everyone was ok, mission first, troops always. You paid full measure the day Jesus called you home. I was saddened by the news, but I 100% knew that you would not leave if there was one person left behind. I find peace knowing as the building was falling down, you were secure in the arms of Jesus going up. God Speed Sargent Bowman. Never Surrender.

Larry as the years pass prayers in your memory do not fade, also I know that we are no longer strangers and most likely one of our lord angels. I just want you to know that I for many years now consider you family, and feel a bond with you Always Diane

I'm studying the 9/11 attacks in class at Shanley High School in Fargo North Dakota and Larry Bowman's service is still impacting lives today. I thought is is so noble and selfless to give your life for someone else. It's so cool what he did. He was a great man and he will never be forgotten. I will continue praying for him. Thank you Larry Bowman.
