Larry Duane Hilderbrand

I will never forget Larry. He was a big, wonderful, interesting person to work with.

Larry was a treat to work with in the editorial office of The Oregonian. Fun to argue with. He was magnanimous and full of good humor. A good man. A good life.

Larry was a most valued and appreciated colleague at The Oregonian. He was a great mentor and inspiration to me as city editor. As a member of the editorial board he was a tireless and influential voice for sensible land use planning in Oregon. Larry, you were the quintessential journalist and an all around "hale fellow well met."

To Larry's children: Your dad was the nicest man. So kind, warm and always smiling. I worked with your dad for years as the editorial department assistant at The Oregonian, seated across from his office. I was really sorry to see this obituary. But you can feel proud and happy to know that your dad made positive impacts in this world, from all he did for the city of Portland to simply being a nice, friendly person. My sincere condolences.

Larry Hilderbrand set an example for community involvement down to the street level. I will never forget him (and Wayne Thompson, another fine colleague from the Oregonian) coaching our 6th grade Goldenball basketball team at Capitol Hill Elementary during the same year that culminated in the Blazers' championship season (in which we all reveled together).
