HILDEBRAND - RUSS FUNERAL HOME - Rhinelander Obituary

Larry Arthur Scheel

March 18, 1940 ~ October 23, 2024

Age ~ 84

Larry Arthur Scheel, 84, of Racine, Wisconsin, passed away on October 23, 2024, at his home in Minocqua, Wisconsin, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born March 18,1940, in Racine, Wisconsin, the son of Hertha and Arthur Scheel. He worked at American Motors and Chrysler for thirty years before retiring at the age of 48 to a home he built on Red Lake in Presque Isle, Wisconsin. On March 17, 1962, Larry married Carole Groenke Buffham at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Racine, Wisconsin. They were happily married for 62 years.

Larry was a loving spouse to Carole and a devoted father to Chris, Jenni, Ami, and Missi, who dearly miss him and the life lessons he imparted to them. Larry’s girls were his pride and joy. Being their parent, he changed his life for the better, and they felt that in the unconditional love and support he provided. He treasured his time with his grandchildren, Jason, Courtney, and Matthew and great-grandchildren, AnnaLena, Jacob, Sawyer, Colton, and Ava; he loved being their Papa.

Larry was a true craftsman who loved to work with his hands. He enjoyed renovating old houses. His greatest accomplishment in building was the house he built on Red Lake by himself. Larry also enjoyed spending time in nature both alone and with his family.

A devoted Christian who cherished his Bible and the teachings of Jesus Christ, he attended various churches throughout his life, most recently The Community Church of Boulder Junction, Wisconsin, and took solace in knowing the Lord was watching over him and his family. Larry found joy in service; he felt called to devote time and energy to multiple roles within the church from advising, renovating, repairing, or cleaning.

Larry will always be remembered for being a gentle giant and for the way that he always helped anybody, no matter what he was doing. We couldn’t have asked for a better spouse/parent/grandparent/great-grandparent and will miss Larry every day. Larry’s memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

Remaining to cherish Larry’s memory are his spouse, Carole Scheel; children, Chris Holmes, Jenni (Sam) Kleman, Ami Brown, Melissa Scheel; grandchildren, Jason (Sandra) Holmes, Courtney Holmes, Matthew Kleman; great-grandchildren, AnnaLena, Jacob, Sawyer, Colton, and Ava.

Preceding Larry in death were his grandson, Joshua Brown; son-in-law, Michael Holmes; parents, Arthur and Hertha Scheel; and in-laws, Ann (Orthey) Buffham, William Buffham, and Edward Groenke.

Memorial services will be held November 3, 2024, with a visitation at 12:30pm and service at 1:00pm at The Community Church of Boulder Junction, located at 10445 Main Street, Boulder Junction, Wisconsin.

Memorial donations in Larry’s memory may be directed to Feeding Los Cabos Kids, American Cancer Society, or American Heart Association.
