Larry George Talley (Sonny) was born on August 20, 1950 in Norlina, North Carolina to the late great George Robert Talley and Louise Hinton Talley. He was the oldest of seven children born into this matrimony and the only boy in a family of sisters. On June 15, 2021 Sonny was called by our Heavenly Father who brought him to his final resting place in Oxford, North Carolina.
Sonny accepted the Lord at an early age and was baptized while attending the Roanoke Christian Church in Palmer Springs, Virginia, the family's spiritual haven. His late grandparents McKenzie Talley and Bessie A. Talley were longtime devoted members of the church until they departed, leaving an amazing, impressive and lasting family legacy. His early childhood was spent in a loving atmosphere and was filled with self-pride.
Sonny grew up on the historic and beautiful countryside Talley Farm alongside his siblings and other members within the community of his age who were also reared as family on the farm (the good ole days). As the African proverb that is often used, "It takes a village to raise a child." Sonny graduated from East End High School, South Hill, Virginia in 1969. He married Dale Macklin and to this union, four children were born; Benita L. Talley, Michael M. Talley, Oveta M. Talley and Kenneth Talley. After graduation, they relocated their family to Washington, District of Columbia where he worked for The Washington Post for a period of time. He soon established a career as a mechanic for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA).
Sonny enjoyed life, especially coining hilarious phrases or statements when he would communicate or holding a conversation with anyone, often being so witty and entertaining. You could never escape a room without him sending you off in humorous style with an abundance of laughter and thrilling stories. He was hysterically funny!
He was preceded in death by his parents; George R. and Louise H. Talley; his fraternal grandparents; McKenzie and Bessie A. Talley; maternal grandparents; Powell and Nancy W. Hinton; two younger sisters; Mattie Oveta Talley Evans, Carolyn Marie Talley and son-in-law Lonnie Smothers.
He leaves to cherish his memories; his children, Benita L. Talley Smothers , Michael M. Talley, Oveta M. Talley Washington (Melvin), Ericka Higgins (James) and Kenneth Talley; eighteen grandchildren; twenty-one great-grandchildren; four sisters, Bessie (Sis) Davis (Nathaniel "Naboo"), Patricia (Tricia) Fersner (Al), Renee' Cuthbert (K.C.), Angela M. (Angie) Talley; two brothers, Troy Hunt and Christopher Hunt and a host of loving nieces, nephews, family and friends.
