Laura Kathryn Hurst, 34, died Tuesday, February 22, 2022, at Royal Oak Beaumont hospital. She was born January 21, 1988 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the daughter of Kathryn Spearin Hurst and James E. Hurst.
Laura graduated from Highland High School in Gilbert, Arizona in 2006 where she worked with the Best Buddies program, Relay for Life and NotMyKid.org. She also lettered in golf and helped her team compete at State her junior year. She was a proud Lumberjack, graduating with a degree in Hotel Restaurant Management from Northern Arizona University. Laura spent her career in the hotel industry in southeast Michigan, most recently, at the Holiday Inn Express and Suites at Great Lakes Crossing.
Growing up Laura faced unique challenges. Diagnosed with brain tumors at age four and sixteen, she was an inspiration to her doctors, nurses and all she met with her indomitable spirit of love and kindness. Being with her family and friends, cooking for others, playing board games and cards brought her great joy. She could steal the deal so sweetly! An avid golfer, she had a beautiful natural swing and was a member of the Ladies League at Metamora Golf and Country Club. During the summer, work knew she wasn’t available, Wednesday nights. Golf came first.
Laura loved to travel and was able to cover the globe. She was always up for an adventure visiting family and friends across the US and Canada. She visited Europe with her French class, played golf in Australia with her golf team, and trekked around Great Britain and Greece with family and friends. Her giving spirit was evident in all she did, whether as a Girl Scout, a counselor at Camp Skyline or attending the needs of her hotel guests. In spite of her challenging and complicated health she looked to make others comfortable, happy and just “peachy.”
She was predeceased by her grandparents, Cec and Doreen Spearin and Ernie Hurst. Surviving in addition to her parents, are her brother, Michael Hurst, his wife Paula, their son, George, her grandmother Rose Ann Hurst, many beloved aunts, uncles, cousins and countless friends.
A memorial service will be held and live streamed at 11:00 AM Friday, March 4th at St. Mary’s in-the-Hills Episcopal Church, 2512 Joslyn Court, Lake Orion, Michigan. Visitation will precede the service at 10:00 AM. A luncheon will follow the memorial service at Metamora Golf and Country Club, 1600 Club Drive, Metamora, Michigan.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests those who desire to remember Laura, to please make a contribution to her memory to the American Brain Tumor Association or via mail: The American Brain Tumor Association, 8550 W. Bryn Mawr Ave. #550, Chicago, IL 60631.

I remember being very excited about there being another Laura Hurst in the family, and that I was able to connect with Laura as an adult, what a delightful young lady. Laura, you will surely be missed!

What a sad, unfortunate situation happening here that is so out of place.
I want to offer my sincere sympathies to Laura's family and hopefully great memories spent with her will aid in this time of grieving. The smiles of Laura in these pictures will be so memorable to those close to her, family and friends.
I'm glad Laura got to experience so much joy and life for herself and to others in her far too short Life.
