Baca's Funeral Chapels - Las Cruces Obituary

LAURA DOLORES GARCIA NEVAREZ, 80, was born April 7, 1933 to Rodolfo and Annie (Barela) Garcia of Dona Ana; one of six children. She was raised in the Dona Ana/Las Cruces area where she met and married Fred F. Nevarez, and raised a family of six children who adored her. A devout Roman Catholic, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend, Laura put others before herself and was always available to help.

Laura was a prominent business owner of ABC Tile Company and ABC Bail Bonds in Las Cruces, and later moved to Santa Fe where she and Fred were employed by the State of New Mexico until they both retired. After retirement they moved back to Las Cruces where they loved, shared, and cared for their grandchildren. All of their grandchildren were a significant part of their lives, filling them with great happiness. Grandma Laura was also fortunate to be able to enjoy her great-grandchildren during her later years. She was active in the Catholic Church and volunteered with the St. Vincent de Paul Society. A few years after the loss of her beloved husband in 2000, Laura relocated to San Antonio, Texas where she took great joy in sharing in the lives of her three youngest grandchildren.

In San Antonio, Laura battled cancer, dying on June 3, 2013 in her home with loved ones by her side. She is survived by four sons and one daughter: Edward Nevarez, Steven Nevarez (Jennifer), Trish Custer (Thomas), David Nevarez (Jeanette), and Joseph Nevarez (Michele); grandchildren: Kimberly Woloshok, Brett Nevarez), Sommer Nevarez, Thomas Nevarez, Fredrick Nevarez, Daniel Granado Nevarez, Jaz-Brea Nevarez, Alexandra Nevarez, Jacquelyn Nevarez, and Jocelyn Nevarez; six great-grandchildren: Jordan Esposito, Laura Nevarez, Isabella Woloshok, Nicolas Nevarez, Isabella Granado Nevarez, and Connor Nevarez; two sisters: Flora Lopez and Dora Kuester. She is predeceased by her beloved husband; son, Michael Nevarez; grandson, Justin Nevarez; siblings, Nora Maese, Marie Lucero, Rudy Garcia, and in-laws, Fred K. and Lucy Nevarez.

Recitation of the Rosary will begin at 6 PM Thursday, June 20, 2013 at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 1327 N. Miranda, with a Memorial Mass scheduled for 9:30 AM Friday, June 21, 2013 also at Holy Cross with Fr. Ray Flores officiating. Burial of cremains will follow at Masonic Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made in Laura?s name to the St. Vincent de Paul Society at Holy Cross Catholic Church.

My heart aches for you and your family during this time. Your mother was such an amazing person and she will truly be missed. Wishing you peace to bring comfort, courage to face the days ahead and loving memories to forever hold in your hearts. You don't get over it, you just get through it. You don't get by it, because you can't get around it. It doesn't 'get better'; it just gets different, but time will weaken the pain. Please accept my heartfelt condolences.

We wish to express our sincere condolences to Lauras' family at this time of sorrow. She was such a sweet
and caring lady.
