Laurie Saunders, generous, acerbic, brave and witty, died Friday, July 5, at Alta Bates Hospital in Berkeley. I especially appreciated her skills in Oral Interpretation of Poetry, and then the independent study I took with her the following Quarter. She was a real standout in my memory--a gifted teacher. Sorry to learn of her untimely passing. Glad I had the opportunity to know her back in the day.

I first met Laurie when I worked for the Mendocino County Public Defender right out of law school 20 years ago and then would run into her at county jails when she was representing parolees. She was a dedicated defense attorney and tireless advocate for the disenfranchised and oppressed. She will be sorely missed.
