I have just learned by accident of Dr. Cavazos´ passing. Although I had coincidentally met him socially prior to my own appointment, I was honored to get to know him better while serving the U.S. Dept. of Education under his leadership as his Secretary of Education´s Regional Representative for Region II (one of 10 Federal regions, covering New Jersey, New York, Puerto Rico, & US. Secretary Cavazos was someone who exemplified what it means to "Make something of Yourself". Born on the famous King Ranch he rose up from the dirt roads of Kingsville Texas to become Secretary of Education for President Ronald Reagan. What better choice, a Secretary of Education who used education as the ladder to success, reaching its peak when appointed to that position.
