It is with deep regret and profound sorrow that we sadly announce the passing of Deacon Lawrence Chandler, age 89 of Salters, South Carolina, who died Wednesday, October 6, 2021 at the Lexington Medical Center in West Columbia, South Carolina.


Funeral service for Deacon Lawrence Chandler was held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, October 10, 202 at Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church 4676 South Williamsburg County Highway 52 where the pastor, Reverend David Woods, Jr. deliver Words of Comfort and the Reverend Robert McCutcheon, pastor of Jerusalem Baptist Church in Jamestown, South Carolina preside. The Interment followed at the Salters Community Cemetery, Old Gapway Road, Salters, South Carolina.


Family members are receiving friends at  26 Dotts Road, Salter, SC. Mask and social distancing are required during visitation.

Lawrence Chandler, the son of the late Reverend Joe Chandler, Sr., and the late Mellie Williams Chandler, was born on Sunday, September 11, 1932 in Williamsburg County, South Carolina. He entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, October 6, 2021 at Lexington Medical Center, West Columbia, South Carolina.


Lawrence received his formal education in the public schools of Williamsburg County, South Carolina.


Lawrence grew up in a Christian home and accepted Christ as his personal Savior and became an active member of Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church, Salters, SC. There he served as a member of the Trustee Ministry, Advisor of the Missionary Society, and as Vice President of the Deacon Ministry.


Lawrence was a lifelong farmer who taught many young men and women the importance of hard work by giving them their first jobs. He enjoyed hunting and breed and raised some of the best deer hunting dogs in the State of South Carolina. He loved baseball and was a fan of the Atlanta Braves.


Lawrence was a member of Woodstock Lodge #455 for more than 50 years. He was also a member of the Black River Deacons, Laymen and Ministers Union.


Lawrence met and married the former Dessie Lee Dotts on Saturday, December 11, 1959. They were married for 61 years. Three children were born to this union; one of whom preceded him in death, Baby Boy Chandler.


Lawrence, in addition to his parents and baby boy, was preceded in death by:  a daughter, Deloris Hugee; four brothers, Jim, Joe, Johnny and Harry; and six sisters, Margie, Mamie, Lucille, Geneva, Wilhelmenia and Lillie.


Those left to cherish his memories are his wife, Dessie L. Chandler of the home; two daughters, Barbara A. Chandler of Florence, SC and Angelia B. Chandler of the home; two brothers, Frank Chandler of Holly Hill, SC and Alexander Chandler of Lantana, FL; a nephew reared as a son, Ronald Chandler of New Haven, CT; a special nephew whom he loved like a son, Shaka Moustafa of Columbia, SC; a niece whom loved like a daughter, Alechia Dotts of Salters, SC; a sister-in-law, Evelyn (Harold) Pope of Salters, SC; two brothers-in-law, John Dotts of Titusville, FL and Joseph (Lillie Bell) Dotts of Salters, SC; a host of additional nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
