Lawrence was a role model before the term was popularized. He, Ernest Robinson, and Floyd Theus strongly influenced my efforts as a student-athlete at the 'Velt. I still marvel at the little known fact the he easily beat me by a good margin in a race around Gleason Park one summer day-- after I had begun my studies at Northwestern. How did he do that?
