Lawrence L. Parrish was one of several men in his family to serve in the armed forces. It was natural for him to follow them. "Mom, apple pie and the red, white and blue; that describes him better than anything," said his brother, Tony. "He always struggled do the right thing and to make sure his mom, dad and family were proud of him. And they certainly are." Parrish, 36, of Lebanon, Mo., was killed Oct. 7 in Baghdad by a roadside bomb. He was a 1988 high school graduate and was assigned to Kansas City. Parrish, who fought in the first Persian Gulf war, served in Bosnia, Qatar, Kuwait and Guantanamo Bay. He re-enlisted in February in the ancient city of Ur. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time outdoors. He was always trying to play a joke on someone. He is survived by his wife, Sarah, and five children: Katheryn, Constance, Jacqueline, Hayden and Gracelynn. "Larry was a big hulking figure of a young man and he was crazy about his kids and his family," Tony said. "He was fearless, but he was baby crazy. Kids loved being around him. They knew they were safe and he would take care of them."
