Lawrence Lipsitz Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 7, 2016.
Lawrence Lipsitz, lifelong educator, trailblazer in his field, dies at age 79
Larry Lipsitz, Founder, Publisher, Editor-in-Chief of Educational Technology Publications, Inc., father, husband, grandfather and esteemed member of his community, died at age 79 in Englewood Hospital, New Jersey.
Mr. Lipsitz died of aspirational pneumonia after a decade-long struggle with inclusion body myositis.

In 1961, Larry started Educational Technology Magazine as a part-time venture. It became a full-time business in 1969, and eventually grew into the leading international periodical in the field. Larry's success led him to add a book division to his company. He personally edited and published more than 300 titles. With a life dedicated to supporting change agents in education, he is widely credited with first popularizing the term "Educational Technology." Larry's belief that schools should be the incubators of innovation was the underpinning of his work.

Larry received numerous awards and citations throughout his career. Among the numerous honors he received was the Association of Educational Communications and Technology's first Lifetime Achievement Award. Larry was also a guest lecturer on Educational Technology at numerous institutions, including Indiana University, Temple University, Florida State University, Penn State University, Utah State University and Brigham Young University. In 1972, Larry represented the United States at an exhibition in Poland sponsored by the U.S. Information Agency on Operational Technology. In 1971, he organized the "First National Conference of Educational Technology" held in New York. On the heels of its success, events in Miami Beach and San Francisco soon followed.

Lawrence Irwin Lipsitz was born on July 24, 1937, in Paterson, New Jersey. His parents were Samuel Lipsitz and Rachel Hammerman. Larry graduated with honors from Eastside High School. Larry received a Bachelor of Science and Master of Arts in social studies education from New York University. He went on to earn a postgraduate degree at NYU in Communications in Education; during his time at NYU he served as editor in chief of the university newspaper, The Criteria. After a brief stint teaching high school, he became a public relations representative for NYU.

Larry met and soon married the love of his life, Janice Shapiro in 1966. As they built a life together, Larry became an esteemed member of his community; he maintained a lifelong commitment to his Jewish faith and the practice of giving back. He was a long-time member of Temple Emeth in Teaneck, NJ, and served as its president from 1984-1987. He was a tireless advocate and fundraiser for organizations helping the homeless and the state of Israel. In 1987, he was inducted as a fellow of the Jewish Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Larry is survived by wife Janice Lipsitz; his son David Lipsitz and his wife Maria; his daughter Jill Levy and her husband Josh; his daughter Julie Levinthal and her husband Aaron; his grandchildren Mia, Rachel, Aden and Sydney; and his loving brother and sister, Howard and Arlene.

Larry loved to travel with his wife and kids. He instilled a true world view into his children by taking them early and often to cities around the globe. He was also a proud supporter and lover of the arts and constantly shared his zeal for the theater and museums with his children and grandkids. Larry's love of pie å la mode, long family political discussions and being surrounded by friends and family are emblematic of his down-to-earth kindness, supportiveness, curiosity and love.

My fondest memory of Larry was in my parents' home, sitting in the kitchen with coffee cake and a newspaper and usually several books. He would engage everyone on virtually every topic in current events, history, and popular culture.

I remember he would always ask for books from my collection, and when he came across something he hadn't read before he was so excited. He would grab 5 or 6 and devour them and then return to discuss something in the book a short while later.

His knowledge across the spectrum and genial nature made dinner conversations stimulating, interesting, and pleasant. He would disagree with you, but his smile and joking manner ensured it was a great time nonetheless. I always looked forward to having the opportunity to share his mind, presence, and booming voice.

It was such a joy to have him in our home and in our lives.

You will be missed Larry.

Love you,

David Shapiro

What Larry accomplished with Educational Technology magazine was really amazing. We need more publications like that one, that discuss ideas in accessible ways that benefit practitioners as well as scholars. It was always interesting to me that before something became the next "big thing" it was usually discussed and debated within Educational Technology Magazine. I hope the huge hole that Larry left in our field and hearts can be filled adequately because the role Larry played in the field was so important. Beyond this, he was a great and wonderful mentor to new scholars in the field, which I will always be grateful for.

My name is Josh Levy and I am honored to be Larry's son in law, married to his Daughter Jill. Larry is/was truly an amazing, accomplished, learned, incredibly affable and unpretentious man. It is our family's great fortune that one of the final exciting events in Larry's life was his attendance at & participation in our son Aden's Bar-Mitzvah on Oct 8th - just 1 short month ago. As a testament to the kind of gentleman that Larry was, here is a posting he made the very next morning, even as his illnesses were just beginning to accelerate:

I went Saturday to my grandson Aden's Bar Mitzvah in Brooklyn. He read in Hebrew from the Torah scroll and gave a wonderful speech, both serious and with lots of his own humour and personality. I was duly impressed. It causes me to think that this ritual of having a 13-year-old stand out and deliver, all alone, in front of a few hundred people is a very valuable experience, and not just religiously. If one can perform so well at age 13, then that individual must gain enormous self-confidence. Yes, I really can learn something that's difficult. And I can present my thoughts to lots of people, who understand what I'm trying to say. If I can do this now, then there's no problem I cannot solve later in life. A great maturation, self-affirming experience. Congrats, Aden!

I'm heartbroken to hear of Larry's passing. My deepest sympathies to the family and to the field of educational technology who has lost a titan in our field. The magazine was an amazing life's work, and it is my hope that somehow the magazine will continue in his absence. My thoughts and prayers are with the family.

The bestselling magazine he published for decades has been infinitely influential in shaping the world's understanding of educational technology. My sincere, heartfelt condolences to Larry's family, and to his innumerable admirers within our field and profession. R.I.P.
