Clymer Funeral Home Cremations - Palm Coast Obituary

Lawrence Henry Phelan, 78, of Palm Coast, Florida passed away peacefully Monday, November 1, 2021 after a valiant battle with pancreatic cancer.  Born in 1943 in New York City to the late Beatrice and Henry Phelan.  After the death of his mother, his father remarried and he was blessed to be raised in Port Washington, NY, by Marguerite Phelan.  He also gained two brothers- Gordon and Charles Stanley. He attended St Mary’s High School and from there served in the US Army from 1961 to 1964.  After his service he met and married Janet in 1967. They raised their two sons and two daughters in the town of Warwick, NY.

Larry commuted the 60 miles from Warwick to Manhattan daily while building a proud career that spanned over 35 years as a stockbroker and member of the New York Stock Exchange.  His NYSE family remained an important part of his life long after his retirement in December of 2001.  He spent his retirement first in Long Branch, NJ with his partner Louise DeVito and then they made the move to Palm Coast, Florida.  Larry loved the beach and spending long days in the sun reading, listening to music and doing the New York Times crossword puzzle. Even after retiring from trading, he still kept up with the market daily. Always lucky at the track, Larry loved the horses, Churchill Downs, Saratoga, and the Kentucky Derby.  Being that the Derby always fell on his birthday weekend this turned into a big annual event for the Phelan family.  He was a loyal Jets and Mets fan, often traveling to see games with his sons.  Also an avid golfer, he played in many charity golf outings with friends and family members.  He enjoyed some fun, harmless competition on the course and had many laughs with whoever was lucky enough to be in his foursome.  Larry was also an adventurous traveler and brought his family to see many different parts of the world.  He even was a licensed scuba diver and enjoyed a few catamaran trips with friends.  He enjoyed eating in the finest restaurants in Manhattan, and also manning his grill for family BBQs.  He made a mean Bloody Mary and loved a good strawberry rhubarb pie.

Larry’s biggest passion was music.  No matter the time, day or night, his music was on.  Lover of all genres- the 50’s and 60’s were his favorite decades. His knowledge of lyrics and artists were unsurpassed and he shared the memories that each song sparked.  All four of his children attended Doo Wop concerts at very young ages. Concerts quickly became a favorite family outing with Larry bringing his children to shows ranging from Johnny Maestro & The Brooklyn Bridge to Chicago to Aerosmith.  The lasting gift to all in his life was the pleasure and appreciation of music.  He sang with spirit whether it was in church, his car, or front row of Louise’s shows, which he never missed.

Larry Phelan is survived by his loving partner Louise DeVito. His beloved children, son Michael Phelan; daughter Suzanne and her husband Keith Dice and cherished grandchildren, Amanda, Jacob, and Aidan Dice; son Bryan and his wife Aylin Phelan and their children Isabelle and Owen Losavio; daughter Sharon Phelan; ex-wife and friend Janet Phelan; Trisha DeVito and Artemio Gomez; Danielle and her husband Alessandro Castelmare and son Giacomo; JoAnna and her husband Gerard Stanford and children Carli and Julian: Joann Perrotta; John and Lucille Toto; brother Gordon and his wife Barbara Stanley; niece Leigh-Anne and her husband Greg McClure; nephew Robert and his wife Holli Stanley and their children Angela and Connor; niece Donna and her husband Shane Moser and their children Tyson, Hayden, Madison and Taylor; brother Charles and his wife Maureen Stanley.
