My Uncle George and Aunt Fay had an almond orchard when I was a boy of about 13 or so (kinda big) and there was a labor shortage at the time (maybe 1972). He gave me my first job "knocking almonds". Oh joy.
This was hard and dirty work what with swinging a heavy, rubber-tipped kinda mallet at each main branch of the tree to "knock" the almonds off of the upper branches (by shear vibration of the branch) and onto two large, heavy tarps positioned below the tree. Either a straw or...
