Leigh (Tom) Briggs Jr., 67, of Newport Center passed away at his home in Newport Center on August 4, 2008. He was born to the late Leigh and Marguerite (Regan) Briggs on September 23, 1940 in Boston, MA. He lived in the Lynn, MA area for over 50 years attending local schools including St. Johns Prep and attending Suffolk University. He worked for General Electric for 35 years and retired as a turbine tester. He was a former member of the Knights of Columbus of Nahant, North Shore Old Car Club, and Cars of Yesteryear. Tom liked ATVing, gardening, loved his cats and spending winters with his wife Cathy in Dessert Hot Springs, CA. Tom loved being with his family. He was an avid history buff and was very outgoing and friendly person who was always willing to give a hand to help others. He is survived by his wife Catherine, children Mary Mills and her husband John of Lynn, MA, Leanne Welch and her husband Ron of Waterford, CT, Thomas Briggs of Brooklyn, NY, step children Dona Kulakowski of Newport Center, Eric Bergendahl and his wife Mary of South Berwick, ME, Donald Ross and his wife Leslie of North Berwick, ME, Linda DesRosier and her husband Larry of Newton, NH, Louise Ross of Lynn, MA, Travis and Kim Bowen of Morrisville, Melissa Bowen of Newport Center, Scott Bumps of Newport Center, 25 grandchildren, nephew William Hrubes of Colorado, niece Cara Hrubes of Lynn, MA; and also by his former wife Mary (Russo) Protz. He was predeceased by his second wife Barbara Louise Briggs. Calling hours in Lynn, MA at the Solimine, Landergan, and Rhodes Funeral Home 67 Ocean Street. Lynn, MA on Thursday August 7th, 4-8 PM and also at the Curtis-Britch-Converse-Rushford Funeral Home at 4670 Darling Hill Road, Newport on Friday August 8th, 4-7 PM. The funeral mass will be held Monday August 11th at 11AM at St. Mary’s Church with the Rev. Yvon Royer officiating. The burial will be held at the Newport Center Cemetery following the funeral mass. Should friends desire contributions in Tom’s memory may be made to the VT Kidney Association, P.O. Box 244, Burlington, VT 05401. Mary, Leanne and Tom, I am so sorry to hear about your father's passing. I was thinking about him last week, but did not know why....now I know. Always remember he loved you all very much and keep him alive with your memories and in your hearts forever.
