Leo Marks Obituary

Marks, Leo A.

Leo passed away at his Greenville home on Friday afternoon, November 4, 2016. He was surrounded by those he loved and those who loved him. He was 86. Leo was born in Waupaca County on March 11, 1930, son of the late Adam and Tillie (Lange) Marks. On June 23, of 1951, he married Dorothy Miller; she survives.

Leo's priorities were faith, family and Nationwide. He taught Sunday school and was a Sunday school superintendent, church deacon and Bible teacher. As Youth for Christ director he planned trips to Pacific Garden Mission in Chicago which led to ski excursions for Appleton East and from there to taking other local area high school students on class vacations. What had started out in the basement of his home as a hobby blossomed into a thriving tour business visiting destinations near and far, for one day or many, across the United States and overseas. With his wife Dorothy, they helped create fond memories for their travelers which became the basis for long-lasting friendships. Leo never considered the tour participants to be only customers. They were friends, his "people", and he made sure they were treated well. If he was traveling with the group, it wasn't unusual to find him helping restaurant staff clear tables to get his group in and seated more quickly or checking to make sure no one needed anything during the meal. When he wasn't going on a tour he saw all the coaches off on their morning departures, continuing this practice even into retirement. To show how much he valued his "people" and how grateful he was for their patronage, Leo instituted a yearly Appreciation Party which included a meal, entertainment and transportation to the event.

While Nationwide was in its infancy, Leo continued to work for Gateway Trucking where he was well-known and well-liked by those on his local delivery route. After 26 years with Gateway, he retired in 1980 to devote himself fully to the tour business while Dorothy served as tour director. With Dorothy away on the road, Leo's friendly demeanor and lack of kitchen skills made him a familiar face at many local restaurants, especially the Marc's Big Boy, where everyone knew him by name.

Retiring from Nationwide in 2004, Leo left the business in the capable hands of sons Pat and Tom, where it remains a family operation celebrating 42 years of offering tours. With free time on his hands Leo's first endeavor in retirement was to write a complete family history for his five children. It was important to share his memories with those who matter the most to him. Another retirement activity was a monthly hymn sing-along named Hymns for Him held at Touchmark Retirement Community. For five years participants enjoyed a meal and fellowship before singing favorite gospel hymns accompanied by keyboard musicians.

Leo is survived by five children: Linda (Ronald) Schmick, James (Sharon) Marks, Patrick (Kerri) Marks, Thomas (Tammy Sprague) Marks, and Cynthia (Gregory) Thomson; his grandchildren are: Shane Marks, Marshall (Joanne) Marks, Ashley (Edwin) Bonayon, Corey (Sarah) Marks, Kyle (Melissa) Marks, Chase (Amanda) Marks, Michelle (Brett) Krause, Amy Bucklin, Timothy (Michelle) Marks, Tyler (Brittany Bowers) Marks, Tiffany (James) Joling, and Brittany Thomson. There are also several great-grandchildren: Charlotte, Nia, Carter, Easton, Benson, Anna, Evan, Faith, Macy, Miles, Madalyn, Sophia, Silas, Malachi, Caitlyn, Brandon, Taylor, Kelsey, Samantha, Tyson, Kingston, Colton, Lucas, and Logan; and a great-great-grandson, Carson.

Leo was preceded in death by his parents, a son Richard, a son-in-law Terry Kirschman, and a grandson Chad.

The funeral service for Leo will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, November 9, 2016 at FAITH COMMUNITY UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, N1966 Julius Drive in Greenville. Interment will be in Highland Memorial Park. Family and friends are welcome to gather at the Wichmann Funeral Home, Tri County Chapel, 1592 Oneida Street in Menasha on Tuesday from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM, and again at the church on Wednesday morning from 9:00 AM until the time of the service. Local businessman Leo Marks, founder of Nationwide Travelers, leaves a legacy of contributions to the community. Creating a void in the lives of his family and friends, he will be greatly missed. A generous soul at heart, if Leo saw a need, he was there to offer help, sharing his time and personal interest in others. Not only did Leo show strangers and travelers special care and attention, he treated his employees likewise, making them all feel like a part of the extended Marks' family. Thanks for the memories, Leo. You will be missed more than we can express.

The family would also like to thank their Affinity Hospice caregivers, Jenny and Faye. We will be forever grateful for all you have done for our family.

So sorry, Dorothy. The obituary was beautiful but unfortunately the papers were in a pile and I finally read a week's worth last night. I'll remember Leo at the Y in Greenville. You had such a wonderful shared life!

Through my 17+ years at Nationwide, Leo was always the example I wanted to follow! He greeted passengers with smiles and an outreached hand.....and on the rare occasion I was blessed to have Leo and Dorthy as Tour Directors, the good times rolled! One such trip was a Honeymoon trip to Arkansas...the passengers started out as a collection of people going on vacation......and ended the trip as Family! I owe so much to Leo .....he will be missed.....but his legacy is an example I want to bring with me every time I jump behind the wheel of one of his buses! Rest in Peace Leo.

Tammy and I extend our sympathy to the entire Mark's family. Leo took a chance on me as an 18 year old rebel to be his printer. Over the years he would tell me of the other people he offered jobs to after he and Dorothy would return from a trip to Big Boy for a "bite to eat". God placed Leo in my path at just the right time. I came to Nationwide searching for something, but didn't know what. Leo was such a Godly influence on me and my family, soon I would accept Jesus as Lord and Savior. I remember Leo and Dorothy were present when Tammy and I were baptized. Thank God for you, you will always have a special place in my heart.

There are too many stories to tell and a lot of laughter that went with them. Thank you Dorothy and family for sharing your dad with me. I will miss the walks we took, but I know that I will someday get to walk with him again. This time we won't run out of steam, Leo and we will surely have even more to discuss. I sure will miss you so I will just say "see you later." Your sister in Christ.

To my dear Aunt & Cousins, I can only imagine the
emptiness that you feel with Uncle Leo gone to rest to await our Lord's second coming and we will all be joined in heaven. I have so many happy memories of the times I got to spend on the farm with Leo, and latter in life when I got to drive coach for Nationwide after retiring and moving back to WI.
Yes, we will all miss him, but we know he no longer has any pain or feeling of helpfulness. Leo has left a large legacy and we are comforted
knowing he is in God's hands and we will all be
together again in our heavenly home. God be
with y'all and Dee and I are sorry that we can't be at the funeral. Love, Dee & Bruce

Thoughts and prayers to the entire Marks family. I had the pleasure meeting Leo when he drove the bus to Florida for our spring break trip in 1979. We all pooled money together and purchased a big stuffed Mickey Mouse. The look on Leo's face was priceless!! He will be missed.

To Dorothy and all of Leo's family, God bless you in your grief. I had the pleasure of getting to know Leo at the Greenville Y. His mischievous sense of humor and always positive conversation were something to look forward to each day. A dear and blessed man who always spoke so proudly and lovingly of his family, faith, and travels. God bless you Leo!

To the entire Marks family it is with great sadness to hear of Leo's passing. When I moved to Appleton in 1994 to become a driver for the Mark's family I had no idea what the next ten years would bring. Almost immediately they greeted me with a warmth and friendliness that made me feel right at home. I recall sitting at the table in a local restaurant repairing Dorothy's watch that had a broken latch. Over the next ten years I made many friends as a tour operator and one very special friend "Charlie". He was Leo's gray McCaw. We became best buddies. He and Leo are together and I know they are very happy once more. Leo, Dorothy and the Marks son's created a legacy over the years that far surpasses any coach company and leaving some of them sitting in the dust. After losing my Mother in 2004 I departed Appleton leaving behind so many friends and a second family that will not be forgotten for a very long time. Know in your hearts that in your time of sadness God's arms will be there to comfort you and that he will help you to remember the wonderful moments you shared with Leo, his children, and grandchildren. Recall all the great times, the extra special moments and remember most of all He is in a Superior Place now and he will be just a prayer away when you need him the most. May God Bless You and Keep you in his Eternal Arms.

Well done, good and faithful servant. You will be missed by your family, but also by your Nationwide friends. Back in the 90s I remember Leo driving the bus for a Xavier Band Trip that I chaperoned. Leo leaves quite a legacy!

My mother, Leo's sister, gave to me a sort of a diary of uncle Leo's life. It was totally inspiring and a example of how someone can literally turn lemons into lemonade. I wish I could of spent more time with him but distance in residence was a factor. Our condolences and prayers go to Aunt Dorothy and the whole family.
