Leon Cash Obituary

Cash Sr. , Leon Frank

August 2, 1933 - May 14, 2024

Leon Frank Cash, Sr. passed peacefully with family by his side at the age of 90. Leon was born August 2, 1933 in a farmhouse in the Steele Store Community in Brazos County to Frank Lee Cash and Palma Varisco Cash.

A lifelong resident of Bryan, he graduated from Stephen F. Austin High School in 1950 where he was an outstanding athlete and football player.

Leon attended Sam Houston State University, and afterwards enlisted in the U.S Army and was stationed at Fort Bliss in El Paso. He had a brief stint in Korea during the war and was honorably discharged.

In 1961, he married the love of his life, Linda Restivo and was a devoted family man. As a lifelong member of St. Anthony Catholic Church, Leon especially enjoyed organizing the Annual Church Bazaar Cattle Auction and served in many other capacities when opportunities arose there.

Leon began his career as a farmer and rancher in the Brazos Bottom in the 1950's. In the late 1960's, Leon bought and operated the Caldwell Livestock Commission Company Auction. He built a new sale barn in 1971 that is still in operation today. He continued to be involved with the auction until 1995. Leon had an exemplary reputation of honesty, integrity and fairness in his business. He would often go out of his way to make sure others were properly taken care of and often at no charge. He retired from farming at the age of 86.

Leon had a strong commitment to family, faith, and friends. He had many close high school friends who later in life got together for weekly "coffee shop" and lunch.

Leon is predeceased by his parents; sister, Palma Holliday; brothers-in-law, Bobby Holliday and Jim Bennett.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Linda of 62 years; his son Leon Cash Jr.; his daughters, Jean Van Wyckhouse and John, Pam Murphy and Paul; and grandchildren, Cash Murphy, Jack Murphy and Jenna Van Wyckhouse. He is further survived by his brother, Frank Cash and Luci; sisters-in-law, Jane Bennett, Betty Kirkpatrick and many cherished nieces and nephews.
