LEON KAMIN Obituary

KAMIN, Dr. Leon Judah Of Boston, on Friday, December 22, 2017. Son of the late Rabbi Jonas & Jean (Rybak) Kamin. Husband of Marie-Claire Kamin. Father of John, Katie, Sylvie and Christine. Grandfather of 8 and great-grandfather of 7. Brother of the late Joseph Kamin and his surviving wife Judy Kamin. Friend to many.

Known for his contributions to learning theory and his critique of the heritability of IQ, Dr. Kamin chaired Psychology at McMaster, Princeton and Northeastern Universities. He was an Honorary Professor at the University of Capetown.

Dr. Kamin's principles were tested when he defied the McCarthy Committee and Harvard's Corporation; his values held strong and shaped his life.

A gathering of friends and relatives to celebrate Leo's life will be held on Friday, January 5, from 1-3pm at the Alden Castle, Longwood Towers, 20 Chapel St., Brookline. A light lunch will be served.

In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to SOS Children's Villages, South Africa.

"Dead and divine and brother to all, and here again he lies."

Our thoughts and prayers are with you and the rest of the family Marie Claire. May his soul rest in peace. We loved Leo dearly and he will be remembered and will cherish the memories and good times we had. Hope the family stays strong during this time and share his favourite drink and remember the good times you shared.

I did not know Leon Kamin personally, but in an early 2000s e-mail correspondence he provided important feedback on projects I was working on at the time. His writings were a major inspiration for me, and will continue to inspire the next generation of critics of behavioral genetic and psychiatric genetic research, and the debunkers of future theories of inherited racial and social class differences in intelligence and behavior. Leon Kamin should be remembered, and honored, as a champion of the oppressed in his role as an intellectual nemesis of the purveyors of the false ideologies of scientific racism and genetic determinism.

I have affectionate memories of encounters with Leo, marked by wisdom, warmth and generosity. I recall in particular his hospitality to me and my late wife Inez when we met in Cape Town, Belfast Northern Ireland and Dublin Ireland. Friendship, solidarity and scholarship came easily to him.
My sincere condolences to Marie-Claire.

Leo was my professor for freshman Psychology at McMaster, and I was among those who migrated to Princeton with him for graduate study. We gathered in his lab to watch the Watergate hearings on TV each afternoon - a great memory. I greatly admired his critique of the Burt IQ papers and his unwavering commitment to human rights and dignity. Leo had a tremendous influence on my life and career, for which I will be forever grateful.

My condolences to Leo's family. He was a wise and learned man. Dr. Kamin made many important contributions to psychology and to the lives of the many people who had the privilege to know him.

Leon Kamin was very generous to me when I was a grad student, including me in his family thanksgiving dinners, where the conversation crackled and the scotch was smokey. He was very smart, brave, and kind.

Leon Kamin was Chair of the Department of Psychology at McMaster when I joined the department in my first academic position. At the time he was in the midst of his research on Pavlovian signalling which transformed the field. But I soon appreciated that Leo's interests were wider and deeper than his scientific achievements might indicate. I never met a finer person.
