Leon Markowicz

I first met Leon when he came to Detroit to handle affairs when his father Steve passed away. He and his uncle Joe Markowicz (my father) became close friends over the years and Leon always made it a point to stop and see Joe when in the area. I was impressed with his wisdom and the ease with which he appreciated life, not to mention his sense of humor. I was surprised to see him at my father's funeral but was glad he was there. He rode in my car to the cemetery with my wife and daughter. ...

I have fond memories of honors dinners at Dr. Markowicz's house where he fed us all with food and conversation. I also specifically remember when a fellow student got into a fender bender on the main road, and I went to pick her up. I looked around, realized how close I was, and I knew that if I had needed to, I could have gone to Dr. Markowicz's house, knocked, and simply said, "I need help." I had all the confidence in the world that help would be given to me. That was an amazing gift...

Dear Family,

I am so sorry for your loss. I knew Leon when I lived in Annville with my family who were husband Fred Grun and our children Ellen and Emily. I was graduated from LVC in 1976 as a "mature student." Our family spent a lot of time with the Markowiczes and other LVC professors and their families. I remember his family fondly and am grateful for the times we shared.

Dr. Markowicz challenged me...challenged all of us to constantly strive to write, speak, read the most effective way possible. And as tough, unrelenting, harsh as he could be...sometimes bringing students to tears...we always new how much he loved to laugh, too. He beat us with his sarcasm, yet gently encouraged us, as well. I still have the Shakespeare rubbing he gave me in 1982...the year I fell in love with Shakespeare's works. May God comfort and bless his family, his friends, and all...

My first memory of Lee Markowicz is from English Comp I ("freshmen comp"). For a nervous first-year student at LVC, it was truly an intimidating experience, though I realized later that it had actually been a rewarding one. We reconnected years later on the tennis courts, and I'm glad we did. Lee was a fierce competitor and fine player, especially in doubles. He and Bob Kopp were a tough tandem! No surprise when I state that he was tougher on himself as a player than he needed to be, but...

I had the pleasure (although I didn't view it quite that way back then) of having Dr. Markowicz for Shakespeare I and II while an English major at LVC. He challenged me to think deeply and to write with proficiency. I can't thank him enough for challenging me to do more and to do it to the best of my abilities. I owe a great deal of my professional success to his unwillingness to accept mediocre. I will forever be grateful to him. My thoughts and prayers are with his family at this...

I had Dr. Markowicz as a professor when I attended LVC. He was very instrumental in developing my leadership skills and applying what I did on the basketball court to life as a professional. He was very, very tough on me while there, but very supportive of all my endeavors. I thoroughly enjoyed many conversations with him during my time at LVC as a student and on a few occasions when I had seen him after graduation.
