Leonard Alan Freed

Lenny made the absolutely best Mac and Cheese of all space and time. He and Becky were very kind to me, and his mentorship helped me find my way into ornithology. I will miss Lenny and his contributions to science (and mac and cheese) very much.

I was fortunate to become Lenny´s friend and colleague while we were both graduate students at the University of Iowa. Lenny was knowledgeable, smart, inquisitive, had a great sense of humor and was always a joy to be around. I look back fondly on our graduate school days and treasure those times I spent with Lenny. My condolences to his wife and family.

I am grateful to have taken Lenny´s ornithology class years back at Manoa: He influenced my career path. My condolences to Becky.

Lenny was a brilliant scientist and wonderful human. He is gone too soon. My deepest sympathy to his family.
