Lester H. Brownlee, 90, was also the first African-American president of the Chicago Headline Club. The trailblazing journalist died in Evanston Hospital, the same hospital, according to family members, that had refused in 1922 to admit his father for acute appendicitis because of racism. His father died later that day.

Dear family, I am so late in discovering that Mr. Brownlee had passed away and still want to express my condolences on the passing of a wonderful, caring man. I was talking to my daughter today about him - as a sophomore in high school she had joined the school paper and took a journalism class from him in the summer at Columbia college. She would bring home stories from class everyday and on the last day - a start from his plant which he gave to each member of the class. I wish I could...
