HOOKS, Lester L. - Of Flint, age 83, died Saturday, September 1, 2007 at Genesys Regional Medical Center. Funeral service will be held at 10:30AM Wednesday, September 5, 2007 at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Father Steve Anderson officiating. Burial in Sunset Hills Cemetery with a military graveside service under the auspices of the Marine Corps League Flint Detachment #155 Honor Guard. Visitation 1-8PM Tuesday at the funeral home. Les was born in Stoddard, Missouri on November 17, 1923. Les graduated from Flint Central High School Class of 1942. He served in the U.S. Army as a Medic and in special service to the Marines during World War II. He married Bernice M. Birchmeier on September 14, 1946 in Flint. Les was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was a long time member of the Motivator Square Dance Club. Les was a talented woodworker and craftsman and his works will be cherished for generations to come. Les and Bea loved to travel with their special friends. Les retired from General Motors Truck & Bus and was a member of UAW Local #598. Surviving are children, Michael Hooks and friend, Renee, Linda and husband Thomas Waggoner, Bob and wife Denise Hooks, Tina Ellery; 15 grandchildren, Michael, Bradley, Teresa, Jennifer, Shelley, Sarah, Rebecca, Amanda, Katie, Robert, William, Matthew, Scott, Kristen, Timmy; 10 great-grand-children, Baylee, Trenton, Tony, Sophia, Sam, Luke, Zack, Nick, Anna and Abby; brother, Ed Hooks; sister, Evelyn VanZoren; sisters-in-law, Frances Birchmeier, Pauline Benway and Catherine Birchmeier. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bernice, on March 12, 2001; grandson, Tommy; brother, William and sister, Veda Jones. Les will be greatly missed by his family and friends. I know this will be a big loss to all of you. I remember the Hooks family as being a caring and loving family. I remember Les and Bea from when we use to square dance with them. When we would call and say want to go square dancing tonight they were ready to go. I have a lot of good memories of things we did together. I am sure Les and Bea are up in heaven dancing away.
