Angelus Funeral Home - San Antonio Obituary

Lester Lockhart was born September 18, 1919, in Vance, Texas, and died peacefully at his home January 11, 2018, in San Antonio, Texas. His wife Lorine Vordenbaum Lockhart preceded him in death on February 5, 2006.

Survivors include children Charles (Polly) Lockhart, Judy DiGregorio (Dan), Mary Brandon (Chris), Walter Lockhart (Mary), and Lester Lockhart (Gracie). Grandchildren include Jennifer Lockhart, Stefanie Price (Curtis) Chuck DiGregorio (Michele), Candi Lisenbee (Joe), Ryan Brandon (Ana), and Leland Lockhart (Heather). Great grandchildren include Colby Price, Casey Price, Tailen DiGregorio, Damien DiGregorio, and Danielle DiGregorio.

The family gives special thanks to Micaela Ortega, Dad’s CNA, who took loving care of him and Mom for the past 16 years.

Lester Lockhart was born and raised in a log cabin in the Texas Hill country and became as strong and sturdy as the live oaks that surrounded him. Like many of his generation, he was a child of the depression and left home at 14. Dad wore many hats in his life: hobo, bus driver, and Civilian Conservation Corp member.

He eventually ended up in the military and landed on Omaha Beach and fought in the Battle of the Bulge with the Second Infantry Division. Dad never forgot when the Allies liberated Paris from the Nazis in August 1944. He had to lead a fuel convoy to the city to keep American forces supplied. To his amazement, he never got to see Paris because a group of women stopped them outside the city to tell them they needed to drive through a tunnel under the city to reach their destination.

Dad remained in the U.S Army for 20 years, and his family enjoyed many of the scenic places they lived such as Guam, Panama Canal Zone, Monterey, California, and Capitan, New Mexico. After retirement Dad worked a civil service job at Ft. Sam Houston, and he and Mom discovered Las Vegas where they enjoyed many outings and even won some money.

My father also served in the 2nd Infantry at the Battle of the Bulge. I am sorry for your loss and only God can bring you through these tough times.

Dear Walter, Mary, Lester, Gracie and family,
I am so sorry to read of your father's passing....another one of the "Great Generation". It is obvious that his life was full, sometimes stressful and demanding, but balanced by the love of his grand family, and passing- time excursions that gave him enjoyment.

Please accept my condolences for your loss. It was an honor to know Mr. Lockhart.

My heartfelt condolences. May Gods loving kindness bring comfort and strength to you at this very difficult time. John 3:16
