A Life Lived on Her Own TermsLester R. Shepard lived a life in motion-across countries, cultures, and expectations-and she did so with determination, humor, unmistakable style, and a brilliant smile. She was ahead of her time, not by design, but because she refused to live any other way. She trusted her instincts, spoke her mind, and built her life on her own terms-again and again.She passed away on September 23, 2023, in Tanjay City, Philippines.Born on March 20, 1941, Lester was one of twelve children of Maximino Destura and Presentacion Rondina. She was raised in a lively household where personality was essential and resilience was learned early. Even as a girl, she was strong-willed and determined-never one to accept limits quietly.When financial hardship threatened her college dreams, Lester didn't wait for change-she made it happen. In the bustling markets of Cebu, she started a small business selling peanuts, using charm, persistence, and keen instincts to earn her tuition. In 1961, she graduated from the University of San Carlos with a degree in Commerce-a testament not only to her intelligence, but to her grit.She began her career at Malacañang Palace as a budget aide, where she was quickly recognized for her integrity. Lester believed in doing things the right way, even when it was inconvenient-a principle she carried throughout her life. During this time, she met John Brackeen, an American Marine. They married, and in 1964 she moved to California, where she raised three children, often on her own while he served in Vietnam. Life demanded much of her, and she met it with unwavering strength.When that chapter ended, Lester returned to the Philippines with her children and began again. She built a thriving business managing a dozen movie theaters across multiple islands-negotiating deals, traveling frequently, and creating opportunities not just for herself, but for others. She led with confidence in spaces where women were rarely seen, all while raising her family. During this time, she shared her life with Enrique Sy, and together they welcomed a daughter.In the early 1980s, Lester returned to the United States and married Dr. Spencer Shepard. To their surprise and delight, she welcomed another daughter. When Spencer became gravely ill, Lester made a heartfelt promise to raise their daughter in the community he wished for her-a commitment that led her to settle in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, where she would live for more than thirty years.During her years in New Jersey, Lester brought her unmistakable personality everywhere she went-from First Fidelity Bank to Wawa. Her quick wit and candid honesty became the stuff of legend. She had a way of "telling her bosses what to do" that made people laugh-and listen.In this time, Lester shared her life with her companion, Dr. Robert Smith, whose presence brought joy, steady support, and friendship for over 20 years.Yet it was often in the everyday moments that Lester's spirit shone brightest. She was a constant presence in grandchildren's upbringing, filling their lives with laughter, practical wisdom, and memories they will never forget. She also spent countless days with her sister Lila at the Golden Nugget Flea Market, selling antiques, crochet, and plants. Lester had a gift for nurturing growth-whether in gardens, businesses, or the people she loved.In retirement, she continued to move, travel, and connect with her children and grandchildren across continents and time zones. Distance never limited her presence; she showed up fully, wherever she was needed.Lester was a woman of contrasts: elegant yet formidable, stubborn yet generous, practical yet deeply loving. She could command a room one moment and chase goats from her garden the next, or toss Cheerios into a grandchild's playpen in her own practical, no-nonsense way. She was never conventional-and never needed to be.In her later years, a stroke took her ability to speak but never her presence. Even without words, she communicated-through a look, a gesture, and a strength that spoke volumes to those who loved her.She was laid to rest at Tanjay Serenity Garden Memorial Park in Tanjay City, Philippines, surrounded by the family she built, supported, and loved fiercely.She is survived by her children: David (Queenie) Brackeen of Texas; Maya (Fehmi) Brackeen of France; Bill (Stella) Brackeen of the Philippines; Elaine Sy of the Philippines; and Laura (Joseph) Horvath of North Carolina.She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren: Stefan Turunc, Chase Brackeen, Stephanie Brackeen, Madeline Brackeen, Isabella Turunc, Juesa Brackeen, Alexander Brackeen, Josephine Brackeen, Catilina Horvath, Jacqueline Brackeen, Katrina Turunc, Angel Brackeen, Jayger Horvath, Aubriel Horvath, and Raine Sy. She was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Trisha Brackeen.She is further survived by her great-grandchildren, Rose Skarbowsky and Isaac Skarbowsky, and by her sisters, Lancy Dombrowski of New Jersey and Lina Lansberry of Florida.Lester's life cannot be captured in titles or timelines. It is better understood in motion-in the risks she took, the lives she shaped, the laughter she sparked, and the strength she passed on. She built a life not once, but many times over-and in the generations she leaves behind, her story continues to unfold.
