Lew Schoenberg, who died after a long illness on April 16, was born March 9, 1941 in Brooklyn, NY to George and Etta Schoenberg. He ran track at Erasmus High School in Flatbush (where his schoolmates were Barbra Streisand, Neil Diamond, and Bobby Fischer, among others), the start of a lifelong...

Not sure what to say?

One of the most influential teacher/counselors I had in school. The only counselor I felt comfortable confiding in. Not one ounce of judgmental attitude from him. He truly understood the mind of a teenager which also brought a patient approach. A pleasure knowing Lew. I graduated from Central Catholic in 1984

A quote from My First Summer in the Sierra, a journal by John Muir, 1864. "This grand show is eternal. It is always sunrise somewhere; the dew is never all dried at once; a shower is forever falling; vapor is ever rising. Eternal sunrise, eternal sunset, eternal dawn and gloaming, on sea and continents and islands, each in its turn, as the round earth rolls."

I was lucky to have Lew in my life as a child as he was a close friend of my dad in that chapter. He had such a warm and peaceful energy that he brought to every visit. Reading about his life, I wish I could have known him as an adult so I could have appreciated the many stories he would have had to share. What an amazing life story and influence in so many lives. Glad you are at peace now, Lew. Hugs to you, Clarissa.

Lew or "Mr Schoenberg" as I called him in highschool was a true ally and friend to students. He saw you and created space for how tricky it could be to be a teenager. I remember spending lunches in his office in our thrown together "club" called World Religions. We hung out (some would come and go) and his office was a place of peace and true fun amidst the sometimes chaotic world outside. Thank you Mr Schoenberg for giving so much of yourself to your students - you changed so many lives over...

Dear Lew, I think we met in 1961, in an enormous train terminal (or was it a ferry terminal?) in Southern Spain, heading to Morocco. I'll always remember your kindness, generosity and quiet wisdom as well as your great sense of humor! Sending love to Clarissa. Annie

Happy Father´s Day in heaven, Lew. It´s taken me all day to find the words. Maybe because the grief is still fresh, or maybe because no words will ever feel big enough to honor the kind of man you were. We lost you in April and my heart is still broken. Lew was my mentor, friend, bonus dad and Grandpa Lew to Maija. Today, I´m holding onto the memories and the legacy of kindness he leaves behind. We love you. We miss you. Always.

Thank you for believing in me, Lew. May your memory be eternal! RIP

I worked with and learned from Lew at Adams High School. He was such a bright spirit and brought his light where ever he landed. I remember the sight of him after a diet of carrots.....he became the "original Orange Man." A spirit like his lives on in the others he touched.
