Not sure what to say?

Lew,

I just received the belated sad news. You were such a great friend to the Coast Guard, and especially to those of us lucky enough to have been assigned to Station Short Beach. Legendary! You adopted us all, mentored us, took us on ski trips, attended and contributed to our morale events and so much more.

Your vessel, "POORHOUSE," was well known at the West End and in local waters. POORHOUSE was also a far traveler, taking trips as far as the Florida Keys. My daughter...

I was very saddened to learn that Lew passed away this year. From 1980 to 1981 I was stationed at Coast Guard Station Short Beach at Jones Beach, Long Island. Lew (Skipper of the POORHOUSE) was a very good friend to the crew at Short Beach. He took several of us skiing to Hunter Mountain on a few occasions and we always had a great time in his company. I know I speak for my shipmates at Short Beach when I say how glad we all were to know him.

Uncle Lew will be missed dearly. Laura, Ron & Kathie and Joan my prayers are with all of you. Know that Uncle Lew is now with my mother (his sister)and his brother.
I am sorry I learned of his passing today.

I have fond memories of "Uncle Louie" coming over to my families (the Murphy's) house on Davidson Place. He would stop over on his meal breaks. When I would hear him come over I would rush down the stairs and into the kitchen. He would always say, "there she is!" In a loud hapy voice. He would always share his onion rings with us! He was a good man,I will miss him. Sorry of your loss. Love, Haiden
