Linwood Massie Martin

Linwood Massie Martin,,, of Charlottesville, passed away on Saturday, July 14, 2012, at his home surrounded by his family. Linwood was born on January 24, 1941, in Nelson County, a son of the late Bland Massie Martin and Lucy Jane Martin.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one stepparent, Dotty Martin; his son, Linwood Scott Martin; three brothers; two sisters; and a nephew. Linwood loved the time spent with his brothers and sisters in the back woods of Nelson County, at the "old home place", at the twin pines. He would often talk about these times and loved to visit the place with his family. He was proud of where he came from and the roots of his past dug deep and kept him strong throughout his life. He was able to pass this on to his remaining family as they continued to tell his stories and stand strong on his behalf. His love for playing music and cards was also a passion of his. He would spend many happy hours engulfed in this love and was stated in the end saying that he would miss this the most. Whether he was a son helping watch over his sisters and brothers, a brother helping collect firewood or tending to the garden, a husband caring and loving for his wife, a father supporting and teaching his children life's secrets, a grandfather consoling the kids that everything would be okay, or a friend lending a helping hand in the time of need; Linwood would always be there. You will be truly missed, but we know your spirit will still be there to guide us through our remaining path, in times of need. Linwood was a journeyman plumber by trade in his early career and worked for the city of Charlottesville for 26 years as a gas mechanic until his retirement in 2006. Linwood is survived by his wife, Margaret Martin of Charlottesville; a daughter, Deborah Shawkey and son-in-law, Robert, of Crimora; two granddaughters, Jessica and Amber Shawkey, of Crimora; a grandson, Justin Martin of Charlottesville; four sisters, Lila Robertson of Staunton, Liz Lutton and husband, David, of Waynesboro, Shirley Mcgann and husband, Donald, of Stuarts Draft, and Glaydus Martin of Waynesboro; two brothers, Bland Martin Jr. and wife, Brenda, of Batesville and Robert Martin and wife, Wanda, of Schuyler; brother-in-law, David Breeden and wife, Judy, of Scottsville; 10 nephews, Jimmy, Chris, Ricky, Wess, Michael, Gary, Chad, Robert Jr., Tony, and Jason; eight nieces, Phillis, Cindy, Robin, Missy, Pam, Amanda, Sandra, and Pam R. A special thank you to Tony Morris of Charlottesville, for being a true friend for over 50 years. Playing music with you was one of his greatest pastimes, along with conversation. We are grateful for your everlasting friendship and love. The family will receive friends from 1 until 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 18, 2012, at Hill and Wood Funeral Home with a memorial service beginning 2 p.m. with the Reverend Anthony F. Andres officiating.

The interment will be private. Friends may send condolences to the family at www.hillandwood.com.
