Lisa Schaffner Obituary

SCHAFFNER, Lisa Lyn, a community advocate, adoring mother, beloved wife, and friend to all – referred to as a legend and one of Richmond's greatest treasures - left us to be with her Heavenly Father on August 19, 2021.

Lisa was genuinely loved by thousands for her friendship, unique talents, generosity, kindness, adoration of her community, civic mindfulness, love of her family and perhaps most of all for her infectious, hilarious, sense of humor and smile.

Born February 1962 in Baltimore, Ohio to Terry and Linda Schaffner, she was a small-town girl destined for a larger-than-life future. After graduating from Ohio University, she began her dream career in TV broadcasting. She spent over 30 years sharing her love of life across New York, Wisconsin and Richmond, Virginia.

Following her broadcast career, Lisa joined United Network for Organ Sharing and embodied the phrase that she coined, "Team UNOS." She took pride in creating life-changing relationships through organ donation and considered everyone she met to be family. UNOS perpetuated her passion to help others and was yet another avenue for Lisa to advocate and support the community that she was a proud member of for over 25 years. What she did for her family and friends, the people she met and those she didn't, can never be measured in dollars or counted in lives touched, it can only be measured by the breadth of her smile that lights the faces of those thinking of her – this is the way she would want to be remembered.

Lisa is survived by her father and mother, Terry and Linda Schaffner; her brother, Michael Schaffner; her two children, Danielle and Jesse Powell; and her loving husband and family, Tyrone Ashman, Erika Jefferson, Mallory Heath, Jordan Ashman; and three grandchildren, that brought the biggest smile to her face every day.

Funeral services are being handled by Woody's Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, Lisa would love a donation to Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) or your favorite local charity.

It's hard to believe our precious Lisa left us 2 years ago. She was the beacon of light which shone across the sea at all times.

I think about Lisa often and how blessed we are to have had her in our lives.

I met Lisa a few years ago at one of the UNOS galas that I was invited to as a Donor Dad. I remember her as a warm and energetic person who made you feel as if she has known you for years. I was deeply saddened to hear of her untimely passing. The organ donation/transplantation community has lost an incredible advocate.

Lisa was an inspiration to ALL and will be missed by so many! She was generous, kind, full of energy and fantastic in the world of broadcasting/PR. In early May of 2021, just before her wedding I had the opportunity to design a lovely arrangement of Stargazer Lilies and Roses that her "husband to be" ordered for her just prior to their wedding. Someone at the florist where I was working a couple days a week mentioned that Stargazer Lilies were Lisa's favorite flower! I was honored to make that special arrangement to be delivered to Lisa!! Prayers to her husband, Tyrone and her family/friends during this most difficult time! Only the good die young!! Cherish the memories of a beautiful life!!

Please accept my sincerest condolences. I remember her welcoming me to RVA as a cub reporter & watching her face light up when we discovered we were fellow Bobcats. She was always so kind, a true professional, & wonderful to work with during her tenure w/WRIC, UNOS & the Virginia Public Safety Board. She made such a difference in all that she did. She is greatly missed.

I am deeply saddened and sorry to have learned of the sudden passing of our dear Lisa.

She was a joy to have known for many years.
Her presence was felt everywhere. She brought awareness to communities far and wide for health and human services, the non profit sectors. ( This is how I came to know Lisa.)

She was a visionary, a beautiful, committed, deeply caring soul.

Lisa, we're all going to miss you, your beautiful smile, your zest and gusto for life and how to get things done.
Our lives were made better and enriched because of knowing you, Lisa. We are deeply thankful and blessed with the privilege and honor of having you in our lives. We you.
