Not sure what to say?

Impressive professor indeed. I had him for Prose Fiction and I remember writing a long essay. His point was always to get to the point. So he told me it was too long and I needed to rewrite it and shave some words off it. He taught me the importance of economy of language. And he taught literature in a very kind, soft-spoken way but got his point across. This is a life well lived.

My deepest condolences to the Schmidtberger family. Loren was a complete gentleman. I will always treasure our friendship.

Loren Schmidtberger was one of two or three gifted and inspiring professors who had a profound influence on me as an English major at Saint Peter's in the 1960s. When I joined the faculty in 1974, he was a patient and generous mentor. When I succeeded him as chair in the fall of 1984, he was always ready to guide me through the perplexities of my new administrative responsibilities--even long after they were no longer so new.. In the faculty seminar that he conducted as Durant Professor in...

Where do I begin. I started working at St Peter's University on June 18, 2001. Since it was summertime there really wasn't a huge presence on campus.

When his life, Mary, passed he was heartbroken. I remember it like...

Tribute to Loren F. Schmidtberger by William Luhr - October 2025 I met Loren Schmidtberger in the late 1970s when, as Chair of the English Department, he hired me to teach at Saint Peter´s College (later University). I was immediately impressed with his genial, at times folksy, and attentive manner combined with his palpable competence in his role. He set me at ease and made me want to please him and work effectively in his Department. That never changed during the decades I knew him. He...

Will never forget how helpful Dr Schmidtberger was to me in St Peter´s College. As an English major I had him for a number of English courses. He introduced me to one of his favorites: William Faulkner. Also helped me adjust to civilian life after a tour of duty in Viet Nam as an US Army infantryman.

I´m so honored to have spent time with Mr. Schmidtberger during his trips to Los Angeles. His warmth and his wit are reflected in his offspring. I´m so grateful I was able to meet the man who raised my most precious lifelong friend in his daughter, Mary.
