Wyss, Loren L. 79 April 12, 1934 April 28, 2013 Loren Wyss was the son and grandson of Swiss and German immigrants and felt that informed his personality and character. He was witty, ironic and generous. Born in Portland, he attended Fernwood Grade School and Grant High School where he made...

Not sure what to say?

Dear Judy,

I have only just come across this weblink and apologise for the lateness of this entry.

I was just reading the obituary again and still can't quite believe Loren has left this world. He was a wonderful, warm-hearted person who cared deeply about the causes he was supporting. I only knew him for a few short years but felt that we connected quickly. I knew he cared sincerely about Clare Hall and Sir Michael Stoker. Everyone at Clare Hall is grateful for all the...

Dear Judy,

I had fond memories of your family (and your cats!) while growing up in Portland, and the maps of England and Scotland in the downstairs bedroom. Tibby and I had huge imaginations whilst playing as children in and around your lovely home (and your violins!).

My deepest condolences for your loss.

Sincerely,
Alexis Hennessy

I'd always admired Loren's fine mind. I never got a chance to tell him, but once he, as President of the State
Board of Higher Education, supported a position that I, as a member of the PSU Planning Council, had been vigorously arguing for, overriding a "Blue Ribbon" citizens' committee, the PSU Planning Council, and the PSU President. Loren immediately saw the decision options and their consequences with a clarity that had required me some time to arrive at and that had altogether...

As a grateful grantee, I recall many years of gracious philanthropy and community commitment. Thank you, Loren, for all you've done for all of us.

As the recipient of a Wyss Foundation award at King's Lynn Art Centre, I would like to say how grateful I am to Loren and Judy Wyss for their involvement and support to a wide range of artists. Their generosity provides far more than financial support, giving artists encouragements and a show of appreciation, which is much appreciated. Loren L. Wyss's passing will be a sadness not only for his close family but also to the wide range of those touched by these kind acts of support.

I was fortunate enough to be the recipient of a Wyss Foundation award at the King's Lynn Open Art Exhbition. The involvement and support given to a wide range of artists by Loren and Judy Wyss and the impact on those artists' self-confidence is truly valued and appreciated. This generous man will be missed, not only by his family and close friends but also by many others

I heard many stories from mutual friends about Loren over the years, though didn't see him even every decade. Any of his words and observations meant a lot to me.
He was a good man.
I was unreasonably flattered when he asked my neighbor how my tomatoes were doing after a storm.
Loren was a huge boon to Portland especially. He thought further and stood up when others didn't see a problem. Think TriMet. One quote from him, "It's a very dangerous thing to be making big promises during...

A most solid citizen, important supporter of progressive life in the community.

Loren had a dry wit that didn't suffer fools easily. I enjoyed his company, discussions (occasional disagreements), cooking and respected his critical thinking and sense of social responsibility. My sympathy and best wishes go to Judy and his family. I know they love and miss him greatly. He will be missed for all those things he has done that few know about but influenced our lives in many and subtle ways.
