I've know Loretta all my life. She was older than me. I recall only the good times I had with her and her family. I really grew to love and respect her when the FFA cut Christmas trees and she was asked to be our "Momma Bear". Single handedly she would feed 12 starving teenagers and all the grown-ups that would face the cold in the middle of November living in tents in the evening and cutting trees during the day. We always came back to camp to find a warm lunch, or supper waiting for us or even just a hot cup of chocolate or coffee in the middle of the day. She never complained (except at 5 am when she was getting the fire started for breakfast). Then we figured out we better get the fire started before she got up or breakfast would have to wait. Never once did she stop caring for us. I remember her going from fair to fair (Cow Palace) making sure that everyone had something to eat and a place to sleep. Her kids and anyone else who would come to the camp trailer were welcome to eat or sleep. She never turned anyone away. The other big job she had was "peace keeper". You can imagine how many kids she sat down and gave a good ole' chewing out for not doing something. Loretta never had a harsh thing to say about anyone and would be the first to stop a rumor in its tracks. I have no idea how many 4-H and FFA activities she went to but there was one area of the fair she would NEVER visit. The "poultry" barn. She was deathly afraid of chickens and all types of fowl. That was the only weakness I ever knew she had.
I will miss Loretta as everyone else who she touched with her kindness, affection and cute little smile. There's a special place in heaven for someone like her and we can only hope we all get together again.
God Bless
