Lorraine R. Harris Jones

Lorraine Rachel Harris Jones was born January 5, 1923 in Bracey, VA to the late Ben and Rachel Hendricks Harris.  She departed this life on October 10, 2020 at her home.

Lorraine was raised in Bracey where she attended Carroll Boyd Elementary School in Bracey, VA.  She continued her education and graduated from the Mecklenburg County Training School.  After graduation, she moved to New York City.

In 1948, Lorraine married her one and only, Truly M. Jones.  They remained married for sixty-eight years, until his death.  Lorraine worked as the supervisor for Prestigious Security Firm and retired after thirty years of service.

Lorraine was a member of the St. Mark’s Episcopal Church where she served as a lay reader, taught Sunday School, sang in the choir and was a member of Episcopal Women Group of the Church.  She was a life member of the NAACP and a charter member of the AARP  Chapter 4014.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ben and Rachel Hendricks Harris, husband, Truly McKinley Jones, two brothers, William Harris and Ben Alvin Jr., two sisters, Bernell Thomas and Jennie Lee Harris Hamblin, also by two nephews, Lowell and Josiah Thomas.         

Lorraine is survived by a nephew, Robert N. Hamblin (Shirley); five nieces, Selene Smith, Lori T. Harris (Patrick), Jacqueline Harris, Cynthia Harris and Ramona Harris; and a host of great nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.  She will also be missed by her church   family and her Bracey Community.

A Memorial Graveside Service will be held at 12:00 Noon, Monday, April 26, 2021 in St. Mark's Episcopal Church Cemetery, 401 Golf Drive, Bracey, Virginia.  All attendees are asked to follow CDC guidelines and wear a face covering and practice social distancing.
