Louis James Kopp, 89, of N. 21st Street, Clarksburg, North View Community, died Thursday, March 19, 2004 in the United Hospital Center following a brief illness.
Mr. Kopp was a retired heavy equipment operator in the shipping and machining department with Union Carbide Corporation with over 30 years of service. He was born in Aviles, Austuria, Spain, August 16, 1914, a son of the late Claudius and Angeline Martinez Kopp.
He is survived by his wife, Helen Sabatelli Kopp, whom he married June 22, 1946. Also surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Claudia Laughlin and her husband Tom, Fairfax Station, Virginia; two grandchildren, Cara Laughlin and Matt Laughlin and his wife Kelly; one brother, Joseph Kopp, Florida; one sister, Anita San Julian, Bridgeport; and several nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by six brothers, John, Paul, Francis, Julio, Mitch, and Eugene Kopp; and two sisters, Angeline Murphy and Mary Moine.
Mr. Kopp was a member of the St. James Catholic Church. He was a United States Army veteran, having served during WWII, and was a member Clarksburg Council No. 872 Knights of Columbus..
Mr. Kopp started playing tennis at an early age in the back yard with his brothers. A casual pastime turned into an avid passion for the game. He attended several Dennis Van Der Meer tennis clinics and became certified from the Professional Tennis Registry as a tennis instructor. He became employed with the Clarksburg Board of Parks as tennis instructor and also gave private tennis lessons for over 25 years. Mr. Kopp prided himself in being involved in the lives and athletic development of hundreds of young people.
He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and brother, and will be missed by his many friends.
Family and friends may call at the Davis Funeral Home, One Olen Thomas Drive, Rt. 98, Clarksburg, Sunday from 12-8pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted Monday, March 22nd at 10:00am at the St. James Catholic Church with Reverend Father Robert A. Perriello as Celebrant. Interment will be in the Holy Cross Cemetery. A prayer service will be held Sunday at 7:00pm at the funeral home.
