DOHERTY FUNERAL SERVICE Obituary

Mr. Louis A. Ryan, Jr.--88, A resident of Middleton, NH, and a former longtime Somerville resident passed away at his daughter’s home in East Boston on Monday morning, April 4, 2016. Mr. Ryan was born and raised in Somerville, son of the late Margaret L. (Murphy) and Louis A. Ryan. He served honorably in the US Army during WWII.

Louis was employed by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Department of Transportation, serving as a re-locator. He assisted homeowners and businesses in relocating when state or federal projects required taking land or property by eminent domain. He also served on the Board of Alderman for the City of Somerville for ten years; he represented the residents of Ward 1, a job he enjoyed. Under Mayor Lawrence Bretta, he was actively involved with the development of the Cobble Hill Housing Complex. He was also a member of the Elks, American Legion and the James A. Logan Post. In earlier years he was also an active member of St. Benedict Parish, helping with many projects with Msgr. Hogan. For many years, he enjoyed summers in New Hampshire with his wife and family and after retirement made Middleton, NH his home.


Louis was the beloved husband of Florence (Babcock) Ryan; together they were married over 60 years. He was the devoted father of Deborah Murphy and her husband Robert of South Boston, Stephen Ryan and his wife Patricia of San Jose, CA, Paula Ruano and her husband Mario of East Boston, Kathleen Kajunski and her husband Philip of Hawaii, Caitlin Pike of OK and the late Cynthia Lanoue-Ryan. Louis was also the clherished “Grampa” of 9 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandson. He was the dear brother of Margaret Ryan of Arlington and the late Paul and Charles Ryan.


A Funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Benedict Church, 21 Hathorne St., Somerville on Friday, April 8th at 11:00 a.m.. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Burial with military honors will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in Everett.
