Louis Qualls spent his life preparing to join the military. He learned to shoot a rifle at a young age, competed in martial arts, and wore the Air Force blue uniform of the Junior ROTC. Mostly, though, he wanted to be like his father, who had served in the Army and the National Guard for years. "The day my son turned 18, he had already signed up in the Marines, and that''s the day he left," Gary Qualls said. "I was so proud of him taking that step. It was his choice." Qualls, 20, of Temple, Texas, was shot and killed Nov. 16 in Fallujah, his father said. Stationed in Grand Prairie, Texas, Qualls had jumped at the chance to go to Iraq. "He was with the first ones to step up and say, `I''ll go. I''m willing to do the job,''" his father said. In letters and e-mails, Qualls told his father of house-to-house searches and how humbling they were. "These people were so poor _ they had dirt floors and a sheet hanging in the corner with a can for a toilet," Gary Qualls said. "He realized how lucky he truly was. He gained a lot more respect for life."

The other day I had a dream about you brother. You told me that you were doing good, knowing you are gone. Everytime I hold up a drink, I give a toast to you and the other people who have passed away. You'll always be a part of our lifes brother.
