Louise Liferidge Chatman

“The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want.”   ~ Psalm 23:1

We honor and celebrate the life of Louise Liferidge Chatman, known for her love and commitment to family. She was born on December 28, 1928, to Peter Liferidge and Annie Cain, in what was known as the “Hog Swamp” community of Berkeley County, South Carolina. Although Hog Swamp has long been stolen from Black families and swallowed up by Lake Moultrie, the spirit and resilience of its ancestry lived on in her and elongated into her lineage. Louise transitioned from her earthly dwelling to her heavenly mansion on May 27, 2021, in the comfort of her home surrounded by family.

Louise’s life is not solely characterized by the longevity of her 92 years, but by twists and turns, experiences, and everyday challenges, including unprecedented hardships such as the Great Depression, improvised educational systems, Jim Crow and racial segregation, discrimination, civil unrest, and social injustices. Her full-throttled, unapologetic, and tenacious commitment to God and family was of the utmost importance. For that extraordinary gift, she was well known.

Her Christian journey began early, and the church has always been an integral part of her life. For anyone who reached 92 years, many have long forgotten the names and number of service roles, but she served proudly and humbly God and the Church. Her services started at Old St. Paul Reformed Episcopal Church, Moncks Corner. After Old St. Paul Church was destroyed by fire, the family moved to Nazareth Reformed Episcopal Church. Her service at Nazareth included: the Missionary Society, Senior Usher Board, Senior Choir, Sunday School Teacher and Senior Society.

She was united in Holy Matrimony to Lewis Chatman (deceased) on November 14, 1948. From this union came the blessing of six children. Louise dedicated herself to her husband, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandson.

She  passionately left a legacy of love, honor, and commitment to family as evidenced by the strength and resilience of her lineage, beginning with Jerome Chatman (Willa) of Ridgeville, SC, Alfredia “Vernie” Mitchell, and David “Kenny” Chatman of Moncks Corner, SC, Ginger Chatman of North Charleston, SC, Faye Chatman of Daniel Island, SC and Debbie Bryant (Jeff) of Goose Creek, SC; a sister-in-law, Ruth Milligan, and a brother-in-law, Rentie Williams both of Moncks Corner, SC; cousin and best friend, Lillie Frazier of Moncks Corner, SC; 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren. And, the latest source of her pride and joy - little Desi, her great-great-grandson.

Her  family, those she chose to love and loved her, extends beyond the many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, great-grand nieces and nephews, great-great-grand nieces and nephews, and members of her church family, to people who have adopted her as a friend, mother, grandmother, and auntie.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held Monday, May 31, 2021, 11:00 a.m., at Nazareth Reformed Episcopal Church (outside), 145 West End Drive, Moncks Corner, SC.
