Luc Nguyen Obituary

Luc Huu Nguyen
June 20, 1947 - July 14th, 2014
Resident of San Jose
Luc Huu Nguyen lived a life of astounding dedication to others.
Born in a small village in Vietnam, Luc later joined the South Vietnamese Air Force and flew as a lieutenant delivering cargo. After the fall of Saigon in 1975, Luc emigrated with his brothers, sisters, and mother, to the United States. In the refugee camp at Camp Pendleton, he met and fell in love with his future wife.
Luc settled in Santa Clara County in 1978 and began what would become a decades-long, illustrious history of activism and involvement for the benefit of the Vietnamese at home and abroad. He provided assistance to Vietnamese boat people who braved an unforgiving Pacific Ocean to flee Vietnam. He fought for human rights and democracy. He also volunteered with the American Red Cross.
Closer to home, Luc was chairman of a Bay Area Vietnamese soccer league featuring 16 teams. He was a major organizer of the popular Tet Festival at the Santa Clara Fairgrounds. He volunteered with Buddhist temples across San Jose where his devotion to Buddha's teachings inspired others. He was a doting husband and a loving father.
After undergoing heart surgery, Luc Huu Nguyen succumbed to a sudden heart condition and passed on July 14th, 2014. He is survived by his wife, his adult daughter and son, and his 7 brothers and sisters.
Visitations will be held at Oak Hill Cemetery on Monday and Tuesday, July 21st to 22nd, from 9am to 8pm. The burial service will be held on Wednesday, July 23rd, with the funeral procession beginning at 11:30am.

April 29, 1975, 39 years ago, on a deserted TSN airport that was bombarded mercilessly the night before. Time was running out. Saigon was falling. Despair filled the air. My family of 11 members, anh Luc and 2 brothers were some of the last souls on this huge empty lonely place. No aircraft for miles... except for a broken aircraft left behind with no battery. And then ... yes, miracle did happen. A battery was found and the aircraft still worked. Mr Luc Nguyen flew all of us and 20+ soldiers out of Saigon toward freedom... Yes Mr. Luc Nguyen was my hero. He was my brother not by blood but by heart. I will miss you anh Luc. Rest in peace.

Luc Nguyen will always have a special place in my heart. He was a man who clearly walked his talk...he excuded peace and compassion and was an advocate for interfaith harmony. I miss him already!
