Luis (also known as Louis) Gonzalez Mayorga passed away on November 4, 2016 at the age of 89 in San Antonio, Texas. He was preceded in death by his loving father, Ignacio Mata Mayorga; mother, Tomasa Gonzalez Mayorga; brother, Rufino Mayorga; sister, Sara Marsh.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Anita Trevino Mayorga of San Antonio, TX; 9 children to include Maria Alicia Mayorga, MD of Ashton, MD; Robert Mayorga and wife, Camille of Sacramento, CA; Norma Naghaviani, MD and husband Khosrow of Austin, Texas; Yolanda Arnold; Ida Soriano and husband Jim; Rose Barajas and husband Andre’; Velma Mayorga; David Mayorga, Esq. and wife, Gloria; and Abel Mayorga, all of San Antonio, Texas; his older brother Napoleon Mayorga of Corpus Christi, TX; half-sisters Isabel Mayorga of Arizona; Guadalupe Mayorga, Rosa Galindo, both of California; and Mary King of League City, TX; half-brothers Ignacio Mayorga, Jr and Jesus Mayorga of Sacramento, CA; and 31 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was born in La Parita (near Riviera), Texas on October 11, 1927, graduated from Riviera High School and was the first Mexican-American from Riviera to graduate from college. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Texas A&I, Kingsville, TX and served in the Army Air Corps from 1946-1949.
On April 26, 1951, he married Anita Trevino of Riviera, TX and served in Government Service for 33 years at Naval Air Station, Corpus Christi, TX; Tinker Air Force Base, Oklahoma City, OK and Kelly Air Force Base in San Antonio, TX. He was instrumental in the development of the early radar systems used in military airplanes.
Luis Mayorga was born and raised Catholic and had a strong devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Immaculate Heart of Mary all his life and was active in the Cursillo Movement. He was a caring provider for his family foremost and provided all his 9 children a parochial school education. He also helped raise two of his siblings, Isabel and Jesus Mayorga. He was a role model for his children in the pursuance of higher education, hard work, perseverance, value of family, community service and civil responsibility. He raised two medical doctors, two nurses, a lawyer and four high-level managers.
He was known for his kindness by his extended family, friends and employees. He had an enormous entrepreneurial spirit and started and managed several small privately-owned businesses while still serving as a government employee and after retirement. He was passionate and active in national and local politics and multiple causes to include: civil rights, minimum wage, farm worker’s rights and equal employment opportunity, especially for Hispanic government employees.
He was a member of the American GI Forum, League of United Latin American Citizens and Operation Service Employment and Redevelopment. His post retirement time allowed him to pursue his most passionate activity. He developed an RV Park in the Southside of San Antonio and landscaped the park with oak trees that he grew from acorns, cactus, native Texas trees, bushes and flowers all grown from seeds and cuttings. He loved the outdoors and gardened from sunrise to sunset. He was interested in the historical aspects of the Southside San Antonio and was a proponent of the Camino Real Recreational Development program.
His intelligence, vigor, compassion, courage, sense of responsibility, passion, humor and love of nature and of his Lord will be deeply missed by his wife, children, grandchildren, friends and all who knew him. His wife and children are deeply grateful for the legacy he has left them.
FUNERAL SERVICE
Visitation will begin Monday, November 14th at 5:00 P.M. in The Angelus Chapel
with a Rosary to be recited at 7:00 P.M.
Funeral Mass will be offered Tuesday, November 15th at
10:30 A.M. at St. Paul’s Catholic Church
Interment will follow at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery
with military honors.
