TYLER, Luther "Terry" Luther Terrell Tyler, 67, of Somerville, died on July 24 after a cruelly long period of illness. Not sure what to say?

Tyler was much too young to pass on. My sincere sympathies to Jane, Molly, Ella and the whole family and regrets that I was not able to make either ceremony as it turns out. May he finally Rest In Peace and without suffering.

My deepest sympathy to Terry's wife and children. He was a lovely human being. I don't know the count for how many lives Terry touched, inspired, and changed as an English Professor at Wellesley. We were each so damn lucky. I'm just grateful that I happened to be at Wellesley when Terry Tyler was teaching English, and that I had the good fortune to wander into his class and have my life turned around.
Kerry Cooke DS1999

Rest in peace, Terry. You were one of my most memorable English professors for so many reasons. Thank you. Nabokov!

Jane, Molly, and Ella, I am so sorry to hear this news. Terry was just a wonderful man, and I am so sad at the unfairness and senselessness of his untimely passing. I will always remember his sense of humor and his wonderful storytelling as we stood on the sidelines of countless soccer games, or when we ran into him around Somerville. He loved all of you so very much, and that love will always be a part of you.

Not only was Terry proud of his lovely daughters, he was unfailingly delighted and bemused by them. We knew this long ago as fellow soccer parents and it was true to the end. He was a warm and charming person to all who knew him, a humble and passionate person as well. His humility would often manifest itself in jokes at his own expense. He could afford that expense because of the terrific intellect he possessed. We'll so miss our excellent neighbor and friend. My husband Ray will miss...

I had the good fortune to take three classes with Prof Tyler. One day, to demonstrate hack writing, Terry tossed off a paragraph or two of a detective novel. The demonstration failed because the entire class was RIVETED by his story and begged him to go on! Every class with him was a delight.

Mr. Tyler was a truly wonderful professor and human being. Profound condolences to his loved ones. Heather Ure, class of '95

Mr. Tyler was one of my favorite professors at Wellesley. He was my advisor and friend. My heart goes out to his family at this sad time. I will always remember his wit, wisdom and his incredibly disorganized office!

Virginia Wickwire, DS'81

Mr. Tyler was central to my time at Wellesley. I loved him and learned from him--from the sample class I attended when I was deciding whether on not to attend, all the way through to graduation. Some of his funniest remarks come back to me all the time. I loved him so much. I am so sorry he is gone and that he suffered so much before his death. May he rest in peace.
