Funeral services celebrating the life of Luverne Wendorff, age 89, of Glencoe were held Friday January 13, 2006 at 11:00 AM at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Glencoe. Officiating was the Rev. James Gomez. The organist was Marjorie Hemmann and the congregational hymns were “Just As I Am”, “Amazing Grace”, “How Great Thou Art” and “The Old Rugged Cross”. Serving as casket bearers were Luverne’s grandchildren. Interment was in the Glencoe city cemetery. Visitation was held Thursday evening at the Johnson-McBride Funeral Chapel in Glencoe.
Luverne Anna (Wersal) Wendorff was born September 24, 1916 in Springfield, Minnesota the daughter of Joseph and Alma (Kunz) Wersal. She was baptized on November 5, 1916 at the Moravian Church in Springfield by Rev. Martin and later confirmed into the faith on November 1, 1931 at the Ev. Lutheran Church in Cosmos by Rev. Larson. Luverne attended country school near Bird Island through the eighth grade.
On April 16, 1936, Luverne was united in marriage with Marvin L. Wendorff in Minneapolis. The couple farmed in the Bird Island area and moved to Hutchinson in 1956. They moved to Glencoe in 1966.
After their daughters were grown, Luverne worked at Janousek Hamburger Shop in Hutchinson, Tulman’s Dress Shop in Hutchinson and Coast to Coast in Glencoe. Luverne was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Glencoe where she was active in Bible Study, the Ladies Guild and helping with release time. She washed and set hair at the Glencoe Nursing Home and helped make quilts for the hospital. Luverne enjoyed rug weaving, crocheting afghans, tending to flowers, making quilts for her grandchildren, playing cards in a couple’s card club and ladies card club, fishing, and she especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Luverne continued to live in Glencoe until she needed help with her daily needs, when she moved to the Dassel nursing home. On Tuesday January 10, 2006 Luverne entered her eternal rest at the Hutchinson Community Hospital at the age of 89 years, 3 months and 16 days.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter Eunice Pittmann; brothers Clifton Wersal and Dennis Wersal.
Luverne is survived by her daughters Delores Schuft of Hutchinson, Janice Phillips (husband: Larry) of Hutchinson and Marion Forcier (husband: Vincent) of Hutchinson; grandchildren Steven Phillips, Connie Skuza, Colleen Mickolichek, Laurie Mathews, Michael Forcier, Lisa Becker, Susan Nordin and Kristen Childs; 15 great grandchildren; half brother Ivan Wersal (wife: Donna) of Atwater; sisters-in-law Delores Wersal of Reedsburg, WI and Theresa Wersal of Princeton, MA; as well as other relatives and friends.
