Not sure what to say?

Lyall was my dissertation director at the University of Michigan, a kind and thoughtful presence as well as a fine scholar. I was so sorry to find out a year ago, by googling him (as someone else relates below), that he had passed, although as I had not heard from him for many years I had been concerned. His knowledge and publications have continued to inform my own work as a scholar, and I'll always remember his kindness and his sense of humor. If anyone has contact information for Loretta...

Wondering if Prof. Powers was still alive, did a Google search and found this obit. He was by far my favorite professor at Michigan where I was both an English major (AB '62) and law grad (JD '65). No prof came close to him. I really loved and admired him. I'm glad that he had a long life. I hope that it was a happy one until the end.

As a young man attending the University of Hawaii in 1982, I was afforded the pleasure of being in his class multiple twice while he visited here. I had the pleasure of developing a wonderful friendship with this kind man, and was honored to receive a recommendation from him as I applied to Dental School. I think back with fond memory about the support that he and Loretta gave to this young man still learning to deal with life's complexities. I am a dentist today, in no small part because...

Lyall was my favorite professor at UofM, and I'll forever remember the discussions of Henry James and Margaret Laurence. We were graced to have him in this world. Rest In Peace

Condolences to Graham. I recall your Dad as a very nice and peaceful guy. What a long wonderful life he lived!

Lyall was a supportive Senior colleague and friend. I especially enjoyed learning more about Faulkner from him. Before I got married in 1984, he was living in the same apartment complex as my wife-to-be, and I was happy to have his friendly presence there. I'm sorry that I lost touch with him during his last years. He was one of the most humane members of my department, and I will always cherish his memory.

In Loving memory of a Gentle Kind Man...

Lyall touched my life with loving kindness~ I shall remember he & Loretta guiding us around Paris & Rye, England with expertise... Delightful fond memories of fun years gone by!

RIP Lyall. You had a good run.Always enjoyed our conversations at English Dept. gatherings.
